ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE JOHN H. DAY, ESQ., MAYOR OF JACKSON

ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE. An attempt was made on the night of the 19th inst. to assassinate John H. Day, Esq., Mayor of Jackson, Tenn. Mayor Day was called to the door about midnight, says the Jackson Republican, by the wrapping /sic/ of some person. As he opened the door, a horseman's pistol, loaded with buck-shot, was discharged at him in the dark, and most fortunately Esq. Day had stepped behind the door to screen himself from the cold night, for, having only his night clothes on. The load of balls, entering the room, lodged in the wall at the head of the bed, within a few inches of Mrs. Day's head, who was in bed. Esquire Day did not suspect there was any one that had cause to wish him harm. We hope the cowardly mid-night assassin may be caught and brought to justice.

THE WEEKLY APPEAL. Memphis, Tennessee, October 29, 1846

Mr. Jack D. Wood, Tennessee Room Librarian, Jackson/Madison Co. Library has stated that on the vacancy of the mayoral office, in the spring of 1846, on then-mayor, R. J. Hays going to the Mexican War, an election may have been held for mayor in which event J. H. Day was so elected and served remainder of the mayoral year after which John L. H. Tomlin was elected to that office.
