Heard this evening of the death of Mrs. Mallory. Ed Mallory's mother. leaves 2 daughters Miss Fanny and Mrs. Theus. also another son /who/belongs to the U. S. army, a lieutenant. a good woman. a Christian. aged about 66.

Notice in Jackson paper of today, death of Capt. Towler who has been living in Jackson 5 or 6 years. He was raised in Hardeman Co. I knew his father Dr. T. about 1850. his father married a Miss Bowers. This Capt. Towler was a very impulsive man…. was a member of the Episcopal church….

Johny Theus was buried in Jackson yesterday. died at Citronelle Ala of consumption. He married Ophelia Harris daughter of Dr. Ben Harris….The Theus family has been an unfortunate one. I have known them since I could remember. came to this county from S. Carolina There the father had committed suicide. Dr. Syd Campbell married one of the daughters. Frank Campbell brother of Dr. C. once pastor of Pres. church in Jackson married one. Dr. Warmack one. all are dead. There was Dr. Theus. think he went deranged and Frank (father of Johny) died 3 or 4 years ago in a lunatic asylum. Maxey & Edward I went to school with. Ed died in New Orleans. Max buried at sea. He was a very talented young man. One of Dr. Warmack's daughters married White who has been in trouble about breaking of Bk/Bank/ of Madison indicted &c. an unfortunate family. Kind, clever people. once had large property lands & negroes /sic/.

Attended funeral and burial of Alex W. Campbell. He died night before last. He had been afflicted with a cancer for about 2 years. commenced on his tongue. The tongue seemed to heal but it worked so as to involve the glands of his neck. The last time I saw him on the street, his neck was much enlarged on one side. I can't conceive of a more horrible disease than a cancer in the mouth. He was born in Nashville, Tenn. 4th day of June 1828. His father moved to Jackson in 1832 or 33. 1 suppose when a branch of the Union Bank was established at Jackson. at least he was the cashier of the bank for a no. of years, until 1855 or 6. Alex was one of the first class

graduated at West Tenn. College at Jackson. read law. attended law school at Lebanon, Tenn. Married Ann Dick Allen at Lebanon, a granddaughter of old Genl. Gibbs, the founder of Union City, Obion Cou. was a partner of T. P. Scurlock when the war broke out. He served in the Confederate Army in one capacity and another during the entire war, a prisoner part of the time. was Col. of a Regiment. was promoted to Brig. Genl. after the war he practiced law in Jackson until some 8 or 10 years ago, maybe until 6 or 8 years ago. He ran for congress. it was a mistake he made in entering the political arena. He was ambitious but he was not a politician. He was sound to the core, a Democrat ture. Disapointment /sic/ somewhat soured him. He was a good lawyer and made a good deal of reputation as a criminal lawyer….He leaves 3 sisters (4) 3 of them unmarried Miss Cynthia, Susan Ann, Mary and Mrs. Dr. Scott of Louisville, a wife, 2 sons.

old Aunt Jane /Lemon/ died this morning about 9 o'clock. She was taken rather violently ill last Monday night with something like cholera morbus, caused Charles /Hogsett/ thinks from eating some cabbage. She was very prudent about her eating. when one attains to the age of 93 life is suspended by a slender thread….August 21. Old Aunt Jane was buried this morning. Services at the house by Mr. Anderson. She was buried by the grave of Todd Hogsett….

J. T. Botts died last night. to be buried tomorrow morning. He was for many years of the firm of Robertson & Botts, merchants. They came to Jackson soon after the close of the war 1866. Botts has been out of business for several years. drank a great deal, constant. don't see how he has lived as long as he has. married Lida Tomlin a daughter of John L. H. Tomlin. leaves I think 3 children. one a married girl.

Also notice the death of Major Hosford, rather a sudden death from a stroke of paralysis. a nice clever gentleman. for a long time connected with M & Ohio railroad. at one time division superintendent.

John D. Bond died this evening about 5 o'clock. He seemed to be getting along as usual…. he has been greatly afflicted -rheumatism, dispepsia /sic/, diarrhea…. He came to Jackson to live in 1846. had a sister Mrs. Sugars McLemore living in this county at that time which was doubtless an inducement for him to come. Clerked for a number of year/s/ in the drygoods house of G. N. Harris. married my sister Mary in 51. lived on a farm a number

of years. has lived in Jackson 15 or 20 years. He was one of my waiters /groomsmen/ when I married…. I do not know exactly his age. I think about 72…. There are 4 living children S. S. Martin, Anna (Snider), Mary, Hellen who married Hugh Anderson, leaving an infant Bond. /She/ died about 1878 or 9. There were a large family of the Bond children. one of them came to west Tenn. at an early date. Sidney died at Paris. Mrs. McLemore died at Poplar Corner….

Mrs. Dr. Dashiell was buried this evening. She was a Taylor (Eliza Ann). Granddaughter of Mr. /Philip/ Alston. Niece of John Alston. Sister of Mrs. Dr. Chester, all dead. She was married to Dr. D. about 1847 or 8. A good woman. leaves 2 children living Dick and a daughter Miss Annie very deaf. She will miss her /mother/ so much.

John S. Miller died this evening at 2 o'clock. has been in feeble health and sick for a no. of years. tho up and about until within the last 2 or 3 months. came to Jackson from Bolivar about 50 or 51. merchant. Mrs. Miller died several years ago. He married soon after. caused a split in the family. He was a successful merchant. The only one I remember in the history of Jackson. one son and 4 daughters survive him. August 28. Attended the funeral of John S. Miller.

Went in /to Jackson/ and attended funeral & burial of Harbert Newsom. He was one of Ford's Co. 6th Tenn. Regmt. Confederate soldier.

If buried in Riverside Cemetery Newsom lies in a now-unmarked grave.

Papers full of killing &c. Mid Hays' son aged about 17. 2 of them had a difficulty with a negro /sic/ boy about 17 years old. Shot & killed him. occured /sic/ near the stone bridge at west end of LaFayette Street last Monday night.

Probably buried in the lot with his parents, Capt. Middleton Hays and Sallie Hays.

C. T. Bates died one day this week. He married a daughter of Ben Barr. was a hardware merchant in Jackson many years. I think he was by birth a Northern man but /he/ had lived most of his life in the South & during the war was a Confederate soldier. was retired in his disposition, mingled but little with the outside world, but was liked by those thrown with him socially or as a business man. leaves no children. his wife survives him. a good woman.

Nanie wife of Sid Bond died last night about 10 o'clock. was rather delicate, but had more energy than most women.... She was born I think in Monroe Co. Ark. a daughter of Capt. Billie Mayo who moved from Fayette Co. about 1855 or 6. had been married 16 or 17 years. was I suppose 35 or 36 years of age. Her father died 3 or 4 years ago. Her mother and a sister Mrs. Black, a widow, live in Jackson. Lizzie /Cartmell's daughter/ and I went up this evening. /Nanie/ will be buried tomorrow evening at 3 o'clock. She was a member of the Cumberland Pres. Church. I regret very much her death. Not only a great loss to her husband but to the little boy (the only child living) Mayo, a very delicate child, not having good use of one side.

Don Cameron died this morning. Suddenly while at breakfast table. He had been living in Jackson 38 or 40 years. with W. W. Gates before the war. Connected with the West Tenn. Whig. an elder in the Presbyterian church. a good, clever man, rather peculiar in some respects. lived & died an old line Whig. never could affiliate with any /other/ party.

Linnie Murrell died last night. has been declining for 3 or 4 years. Nov. 8. Went in to funeral and burial of Linnie (D. L.) Murrell…. services at Pres. Church.

Ginnie Mallory not expected to live thro' today. has been in delicate health for a long time…. Callie the only daughter is just grown and would have graduated with the Institute today. Charlie a nice young man is in the U.S. Navy. will not hear of his mother's death for some time. John I think is reading law. at least I see him a good many times in his father's office (Caruthers & Mallory). it will be a heavy affliction to her mother Mrs.

Parker. her only child. never had but two. The other died when a child. John M. Parker the father has been dead 15 or more years. Mrs. Parker was Callie McCutchen. raised in Jackson. a sister of Mrs. W. W. Gates now living. She does all the good she can. good to the sick.

W. F. Blackard died suddenly last night about 8 o'clock. heart trouble I suppose. had not been in good health for a no. of years. was many years ago sheriff of Madison Co.

If Blackard is buried in Riverside Cemetery he lies in a now-unmarked grave The W. F. Blackard lot is designated as the east 1/2 of lot #214 (1939 Index to Lot Owners, Riverside Cemetery).

Mamie (Theus) Deupree was buried in Jackson this morning. She was a daughter of Frank Theus who died several years ago in the asylum at Nashville. a brother of Will Theus. also I think Dr. Leonard was buried today. He was carried to Bolivar a few days ago to the asylum. He had been a good deal dissipated. eat /sic/ morphine. was a man of many good traits. a good physician at one time.

Will Hogsett died last night. was buried this evening from the Presbyterian church…. He lives /sic/ 2 miles n of town. /I/ got there just as the hearse was leaving. Will was about 44 or 5 years old. born in Jackson. His mother (Jemima C. Sharp) was an own cousin of mine. a daughter of Alfred Sharp who died near 1837 or 8. near Cotton Grove this county. His wife had died some years before…. Will's mother married Chas. Hogsett in 1846. The oldest

child died. Will was the oldest living. His mother died in 1857. She died of consumption of the bowels. Her mother died of consumption. Will of cancer, affecting first his lip & then the gland of his neck. He had been confined to his room /smeared/the time for about 4 months…. He had been for many years a member of the Presbyterian church and for several years a deacon…. Will leaves a widow Mary Catherine (McCowat) and one son Curtis 12 or 14 years old….

Hervey Gilmore died this morning at Mobile. remains to be brought to Jackson tonight -to be buried tomorrow 1/2 past 10. The last time I saw him he seemed as usual. looked about would have weighed over 200 pounds. That perhaps in February. gave down at once. went south. consumption I think. aged about 28 or 30. leaves a wife, Mary Lou McCorry. no children. May 27. Hervey Gilmore was buried this morning at 1/2 past 10. funeral & burial from Episcopal Ch.

Old man W. D. Robinson died a few days ago. was over 80. lived in Jackson before the war. had been mayor &c.

If buried in Riverside Cemetery, Robinson lies in a now-unmarked grave. The W. D. Robinson lot is given as the west part of lot #219 (1939 Index of Lot Owners, Riverside Cemetery.)

A young doctor Gates Jones son & I think only son of Dr. Jim Jones, died today from effects of morphine taken early this morning about 3 o'clock. don't know why. no doubt it was a case of suicide. He was a mere boy in appearance. maybe 22 or 23 years of age. left a note. don't know the purport of it.

Col. John W. Buford, clk /clerk/ of the Supreme court died in Jackson during this month. He was a confederate soldier. had lived in Jackson 20 or more years. at one time he & Judge Muse were partners in the law business.

Noticed in todays paper the death of Mrs. Frank Campbell, a good woman. She was a Miss Womack. Sister of Frank Theus. also the death of Col. Clifton Dancy. He was related to the Masons who lived in Jackson at an early day. Mrs. Stoddert being an aunt. His father Dr. Francis Dancy of Athens, Ala. and Miss Rebecca Mason were married at Jackson, Tenn. on August 1st 1834 by Rev. John Chilton an Episcopal minister living at that time at Bolivar, Tenn. The Dancys lived a long time at Holly Springs, Miss. where Clifton was born. He married 2d daughter of Judge Brown. died of Brights disease. He was a Lieut. Col. in the Confederate army.

Mrs. Campbell is probably buried in a now-unmarked grave in Frank Campbell lot.

attended funeral at 4 pm of Tom McCutchen's youngest son. He lost a grown son about 8 mos. ago. was sick but a short time. understand it was congestion.

Probably buried in the T. J. McCutchen family lot.

Notice tonight in this weeks paper the death of Jesse Russell. died of heart failure at Riverside Cemetery last Tuesday -was there with his daughter, cleaning off his lot. He was 64 years old. born in Jackson. Son of Jesse Russell dec. among the oldest of Jacksons settlers. I think it is said Jesse Russell Sr. and his wife (a Sevier) were the first couple married in Jackson. also the death of Gid Hicks an old citizen 58 years of age. born in N. Carolina but came here with his parents when a child. old Jimmie Hicks. Gid Hicks had many good traits and as we all have some not so good. I always liked him. He was a true man to those he liked, rather bitter when he disliked.

Heard this morning in town that Mrs. Jackson was buried yesterday at Riverside Cemetery (Jackson, Tenn.). She had been living for several years with a son at Dyersburg. but if not born in this county came when young. Could not have been /born/ in the county for she was older than the Co. She was a Miss White (Eunice). had been married 3 times. Hewlett, Fenner and Dr. Alex Jackson. a good woman. good and kind to everyone and especially to the sick or those in want. I heard my father often speak of her when a mere child. how she sat on the bed & kept the flies off while he was sick. this was in 1826. He had lost his wife. Mr. Hewlett carried him to his house not far from where the Whites lived. 3 or 3½ miles east of Jackson. She was present also when he died in 1864 on 4th July…. I think Mrs. Jackson was a beautiful woman in her younger days. She had a younger sister Miss Rachel. died when about 18. more beautiful than either of her sisters. Wm. L. Flowers married the oldest sisters.

Likely buried beside her third husband, Dr. Alex Jackson in a now-unmarked grave.

Heard this evening of the death of Will Moore, cashier of 2d Nat. Bank, Jackson, Tenn. He has been to Hot Springs but it seems he couldn't take the baths. July 22. Will Moore was buried today. it seems he shot himself thro' the head.

Charles T. Hogsett died this morning 10 or 11 o'clock…. born in Franklin Co. Ky. 25th Dec. 1816…. His parents moved to Lauderdale Co. about 1830. both

of them died within a few years leaving a family of 6 boys and 3 girls. An uncle living in this co. (Madison) brought 2 of the boys Charles and Harrison home with him….Charles was taken by my father and lived with us until he was 28 years of age in 1846. He married Jennie C. Sharp a daughter of Alfred Sharp….She and Charles were married in 1846. She died in 1859 leaving 3 boys Will, Todd and John. one girl. Jena Wright.

saw in Nashville American a day or two ago the death of R. J. Hays living here in Jackson. had not heard of his death. He was born in 1822. has a son and daughter living in Jackson. Stokely D. Hays and Mrs. Ross Witherspoon.

Saw in todays paper the death of John G. Mann, chief engineer of M & 0 railroad. lived in Jackson many years. married a daughter of Wm. H. Long. born in Ohio. was in the confederate army. He died in the sleeper between Corinth. was found dead. over 60 years of age.

If buried in Riverside Cemetery, Mann may be buried in or near the Wm. H. Long family lot.

My dear girl /daughter Lizzie/ passed away 5 minutes past 11 tonight. September 28. I cannot realize that Lizzie is dead. I will more & more as the few days or months or it may be years (we cannot tell) remain to me. She has been with me I may say all the time. Studied no comfort, far more than for her own. born 27th Sept. 1853. 46 years old…. Last Sunday a week ago she fell and had been helpless as an infant and suffered greatly….

He has been a citizen for many years. had a large brick yard. has contracted and put up a great many of the brick buildings in Jackson, including the public school building erected within the last 2 or 3 years. had I understand a stroke of paralysis....

Notice in this weeks paper that W. H. Farris /sic/ who lived in Jackson for some time and then in the country, then moved to Macon, Tenn. from which place he moved to Jackson. died a few days /ago?/ from the effects of a kick of a horse.

Mrs. Susan Yancy was buried there /Jackson/ this evening. She was a Beverage /Beveridge/. was perhaps born in Jackson. so long ago as I can remember old man Tomy Beverage /Beveridge/ and the old lady lived there. both died at an advanced /age/…. I have passed Mrs. Yancy's house for maybe 30 years on Chester Street. do not remember to have seen /her/ during that time. She staid at home. never seems to have gone from it.

Horace Tomlin's funeral was on hand. He died yesterday. had been in feeble health for months. consumption. His mother died of consumption -was Miss Elder. I suppose he was 46 or 48 years of age…. He married Ann Peguese /Pegues/ daughter of the late Asberry Peguese /Pegues/ and granddaughter of Hays Hewet one of the pioneers of this county. He leaves a wife and several children.

If buried in Riverside Cemetery, Tomlin appears to lie in a now-unmarked grave.

Noticed in this weeks paper the death of Dr. John I. Taylor of Jackson, Tenn. committed suicide by shooting himself thro' the temple. occured /sic/ at the McCoy McDonald sanitarium. Thursday morning /January 18/. He had gone there the day before. I suppose for treatment. however he and his wife have been away for some months…. John Taylor was born in Denmark, Madison Co. about 45 years of age. his mother was Jane Ingram oldest daughter of Dr. John Ingram. His father Thomas Taylor. They were perhaps 2d or 3d cousins. Mrs. Stockton sister of David H. & Robert W. Haynes and daughter of Landon Haynes dec. a brilliant man in ante war times and for some years after will be buried in Jackson tomorrow. She had lived here for many years.

 Perhaps Mrs. Stockton is buried in a now-unmarked grave in the Haynes lot.

Bob Chester's wife (Mary Long) was buried yesterday. Knew she was very low (dropsy) but did not know she had died. She was a good woman, a fine business woman. He depended on her as much so as could be. He will miss her.

There was at one time a large family of McClanahans in Jackson.

Mrs. Davidson was buried in Jackson yesterday. She was formerly Mrs. Burton. The youngest child of Col. Abram /Abel/Willis an old and highly respected family of this county, being among its first settlers. She must have been near if not quite 80 years old. Dr. Burton was in the fortys /1840s/ Secretary of State (Tenn.). Mrs. Burton a gay woman. Burton a defaulter. said went to China. There died. She married a man named Davidson. He died. Since then /she/ has lived in Jackson. never seemed to me a happy woman.

I was shocked to see the announcement of the death of Callie Mallory, only daughter of Ed Mallory and granddaughter of Mrs. John M. Parker. So sad. She was a bright, sweet young lady…. She had been teaching in the public school for several sessions & teaching at the night school…. I am so sorry for poor Mrs. Parker. it seemed when her daugher Callie (Callie's mother) died as if it would kill /her/. now how can she survive this double stroke. pp 162-163. Mr. Wm. Holland, merchant died yesterday rather suddenly. had been a citizen of Jackson for many years. came from South Carolina. an ex Confederate, took a good deal of interest in Confederate matters…. Mr. Holland served I think during the entire war. mostly in Va. with Stonewall Jackson.

I would suppose she was over 80. leaves a granddaughter Fanny Hurt, daughter of Ab Hurt decr. who married Fanny Guthrie decr.

Noticed in the Jackson paper the death of Dave Hampton aged about 60. His father was a good carpenter in Jackson long time ago. Before and after the war.

Hampton may be buried in a now-unmarked grave in the David Hampton lot.

Noticed in todays run /of newspaper/ the death of P. C. McCowat, 84 years old. a citizen of Jackson since 1840 or 42. was with W. W. Gates in publishing the Whig at a time when Whig meant something. The Whig Party vanished….

P. W. D. Conger died yesterday at his sisters, Mrs. King at Germantown, Tenn. suddenly of heart failure. He was past 80 (about 83 or 4). born in middle Tenn. I think in Davidson Co. but with his father came to Madison Co. when /he was/ a boy & has lived here during all these years except 2 or 3 past years has been in Ark. with some of his children. lately with a sister in Shelby /County, Tennessee…. Phi Conger was a man of good practical sense. His father was a machinist of extensive reading especially on the subject of mechanics or natural philosophy /science/ and mathematics. Phi was connected with M & Ohio /rail/road for many years, superintending construction of bridges &c. August 8. Went to town, attended funeral and burial of Phi Conger from 1st Baptist Church. Services by Rev. McNeil….

Philander Conger is probably buried in a now-unmarked grave in the large Conger family lot #201.

Mrs. James Bright was buried in Jackson this morning. She died at Knoxville where she had been for 2 or 3 months with a married daughter. cancer. Her mother was Miss Josephine McCree /McRee/, a sister of Jim McCree /McRee/ who lived and died in Jackson. Her mother married a man named Sandey. They lived at Camden, Ark. when Mrs. Bright was born. I don't know how old she was, maybe 50 years. had lived in Jackson at least 25 years. She leaves a husband, 3 daughters (married), one a divorced widow. one if not 2 sons. all grown.

Noticed in Jackson paper several deaths. one of D. A. Janes. He was a carpenter 8 or 10 years ago, he engaged in the work of an evangelist and has been from here a good portion of his time but his family have remained here. about 60 years old.

Saw notice of the death of Mrs. Taylor, always known as Dosh, widow of Robt. Taylor, long since dead. daughter of Thos. Hale who moved to Jackson at an early day, more than 70 years ago. I remember him. a sister of Wiley P. Hale killed I think at Cerro Gordo, Mexico 1846 or 7. adjutant in Reg. of Wm. G. Haskell. buried in Jackson.

Perhaps Mrs. Taylor is buried in a now-unmarked grave in the Hale-Taylor lot.

John A. Greer died last Saturday night /Feb. 7/ at his residence in Jackson. I did not hear /about it/ until this evening. was not surprised as he had been in declining constitution for 2 or 3 years. born in Madison Co. in 1827, among the oldest residents of the county. His father Alex Greer was among the earliest settlers. He John A. married Miss Ingram about 1856 or 7. She died some 3 years ago. He married Mrs. Ingram widow of Willie Ingram. Brother of his /first/ wife some years ago. never had any children. John A. Greer was the wealthiest man in the co. His father's estate was about $150,000. only 2 heirs, a sister Mrs. Person now living & himself. I do not know how much he was worth but I should think not less than 2 hundred thousand dollars. Funeral tomorrow morning 10 o'clock. I had known him since boyhood. always liked him. he was an honest man. Had his faults, but I do not know what they were. we all have them. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. am sorry he is gone.

Julius Johnson. The grandfather Col. Johnson lived and died in Jackson more than 50 years ago. He married a sister of Dr. Robert Fenner. 60 years ago he was a merchant in Jackson. The firm was Jones Johnson & co.

Ed Mallory died this morning. to be buried tomorrow 10 o'clock. This is another sad death. another Confederate soldier. Tho' quite young when the war commenced. He was born and raised in Va., Norfolk, Va. came to Jackson after the war. I think in 1868. Studied law. in a few years married Ginnie Parker. She died several years ago. Callie Mallory a daughter, a most excellent young lady died some 2 years ago, not but a little over a year ago. 2 boys are living. Charlie in the U.S. Navy and John a young lawyer living in Jackson. Mr. Mallory (Ed M's) mother with 2 daughters moved to Jackson. one of the daughters married Will Theus & Miss Fanny both living there now. a brother of Ed Mallory in the U.S. Army. a graduate of West Point, perhaps now in the Philippines. The family is Presbyterian but Ed joined the Episcopal as his wife and Mrs. Parker were of that denomination.
