WILLIAM CROOM, Madison County, Tennessee sold to A. H. POE, 205 acres for $1250; "excepting now and forever one acre . . . to be laid off in a square, immediately around my grave yard." Nov. 5, 1850.

Early in 1995 this long-forgotten graveyard, consisting of several graves, was rediscovered during some grading work. It is located on a slight rise several hundred feet behind the Salem C. M. E. Church, Ashport Road in northern Madison County. Jack D. Wood, Librarian, Tennessee Room, Jackson-Madison County Librarian, told Jonathan Smith about this "discovery" and he made an on-site visit there and copied the one intact tombstone there:

JACKEY ANN CROOM
