The Winnie McCraw Circle of the St. Paul Baptist Church met in the home of Mrs. Zetta Lee Williams Friday. Devotional leader, Mrs. Etta Christian; topic leader, Mrs. Zetta Lee Williams. Mrs. Elsie Johnson presided over the meeting. A delicious plate lunch was served by the hostess.
Walter Watson, Leo Jackson and son, Leo Jr., of Chicago spent the New Year holidays with their parents, Mrs. Anna Lee Kirby and Mrs. Dorothy Kizer.
Mr. and Mrs. John L. Steele and Mrs. Jessie Bell. Buckley of Cleveland, Ohio, visited their mother, Mrs. Dessie Steele, during the holidays.
James Lee, a student of Pittsburg University, spent the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lee.

Services for John Staten, a widely-known citizen of Henderson County, were Monday at Parker Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. J. L. Burkley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Parham Funeral Rome in charge.
Mr. Staten, who was 75, died of a heart attack Saturday evening at his home on First St. He had been ill several years. Re was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church and a great song leader.
He leaves a son, Johnny Lee Staten; a sister, Mrs. Julia Gooch of Huntingdon; several nieces and nephews.
O. C. Miller, a truck driver for the plywood company was injured in Peru, Ind., and is being hospitalized there.

Services for G. W. Beal, widely-known and respected citizen and former teacher of Henderson County, were Saturday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. W. M. Monroe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Beal, who was 68, died Wednesday at his home on Highway 20 of a heart ailment. He had been ill for several years. He was a deacon in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, a Mason and Eastern Star.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Clara Beal; two sons, James Beal of Nashville, Joe Beal of Lexington; a daughter, Miss Georgia Beal of Charleston, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Birdie Beal of Lexington and six grandchildren.
Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral of G. W. Beal were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Henry Westbrook, C. E. Hopkins all of Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Johnson of Memphis, Mrs. Virgie West of Nashville, Mrs. Anna Hildreth, Mrs. Lillian Parker, W. H. Bailey, Alvin Phelps, A. G. Bennett all of Jackson, Cecil Phelps of Decaturville and Alvin Hart of Salina, Kan.
Visitors in the home of Mrs. Ora Cooper Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Jim White, Mrs. Lizzie Mae Douglas and Tom Witherspoon.
Rev. J. L. Burkley filled his regular appointment Sunday at the St. Paul Baptist Church and doing some wonderful preaching.

Services for Mrs. Maggie Robison were Sunday at Lewis Chapel M.E. Church with Rev. M. M. Cole officiating. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Robison died early Friday morning at the home of her son, Roy Harris, on Vine St. She had been ill several years. She was 80. She was a Methodist.
She leaves her son, Roy Harris; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren.
Negro History Week was observed at the St. Paul Baptist Church Sunday evening. A very unique program was given by the choir under the directions of Mrs. Juanette Beasley, Mrs. Ollie S. Pearson and Mrs. Lorene Harmon.
Mrs. Lou Etta Howard is a patient at Lexington-Henderson Co. Hospital.
Mrs. Irene Veal was the lucky winner of the $30 trade ticket given by the Men of Good Will Club on Monday night at Montgomery

A large crowd was present at Montgomery School Tuesday night for the parent program, with the community choir doing some wonderful singing under the direction of Mrs. Ollie S. Pearson and gave a very timely and unique address.
The principal and faculty entertained the parents with a delicious plate supper in the school cafeteria. A wonderful time was reported.
Word has been received here of the passing of Mrs. Dora Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind., a former Henderson Countian.

Joe Nathan Dickerson has returned home from Conger Hospital after being treated for asthma. He is showing improvement.

The Community Beautification Club met Friday night n the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marshal Easley. Mrs. Mae L. Johnson was the devotional leader and Mrs. Annie Mae Cathey presided over the meeting. For refreshments, sandwiches, cookies and drinks was served.

Mrs. Elsie Mae Pearson and brother, Jake Parker, were in Omaha, Neb., recently, for the funeral of their mother, Mrs. Mary Parker, widow of the Lum Parker, a former Henderson countian. She was 84. She leaves four sons and seven daughters.
The Sunshine Band of the St. Paul Baptist Church met Saturday in the home of Mrs. Dorthy Parker. Mrs. Mary Francis Dickerson presided over the meeting, Judith Ann Johnson, secretary. Refreshments were served by the hostess.
Mrs. Lorene Harmon and Mrs. Lillian Herron have undergone surgery at Lexington-Henderson Co. Hospital and showing improvement.

The commencement exercise at Montgomery School began Monday night with the senior class giving a wonderful program, J. H. Pearson, advisor. On Wednesday night the elementary concert was presented by the primary grades. A wonderful time was reported.
A large crowd was present Friday night for the graduation exercise, Vidella Williams was the salutatorian and Betty Halton was the valedictorian. S. W. Beasley did a fine job in presenting the speaker, J. L. Seets, principal, Webb. Public School, McKenzie, who delivered a timely and forcible address, using for his subject "Idea, Aspiration and Ideas." The music rendered by the chorus under the direction of Mrs. Ollie S. Pearson was wonderful.
Congratulations! Betty Halton the daughter of Mrs. Mary Halton on your fine achievement in receiving the scholarship award to study at A. and I. State University, Nashville for one year.
Mrs. Luanna Kizer of Paris spent the weekend visiting relatives and friends.
A large crowd from Lexington and surrounding areas at. tended the annual homecoming service at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Sunday. The Rev. L. R. Swinney, minister and his congregation did a great job in feeding and caring for their guests.
The Rev. J. L. Burkley filled his regular appointment at the St. Paul Baptist Church Sunday morning and delivered a wonderful sermon using for his subject "Nicodemus Came to Christ by Night."
Celevonia Easley was accidentally struck in the forehead from a bat by Charlie Massey while playing ball at Montgomery School Friday. He was rushed to a Memphis Hospital. His condition is satisfactory and he returned home Sunday. We wish for him a speedy recovery.

Services for Rev. Reuben Thomas King, widely-known citizen of Henderson County, were Wednesday at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. J. L. Burkley officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Rev. King, who was 83, died Sunday night in his home on Parson Road after an lengthy illness. He was a Baptist.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lydia King; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Raspberry; one grandson, James Thomas Raspberry and one great grandchild.
Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Buckley, of CLeveland, O., are the guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. James McHaney and Mr. and Mrs. John Steele.

Services for Mrs. Eliza Halton a highly respected citizen of Henderson County were Sunday at the Holly Springs Methodist Church with the Rev. P. T. Morris of Jackson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Halton died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rosie Lee McClerking or Barnhill St., after an illness of several weeks. She was 83.
She leaves another daughter, Mrs. Iola Joyner of Somerville; a brother, Tom Cawthon of Pittsburg, Penn., a sister Mrs. Alice Cawthon of Gray [Gary?], Ind. and 13 grandchildren.
A large crowd from Jackson and surrounding areas was present at the homecoming service at the St. Paul Baptist Church. The Rev. J. L. Burkley, minister filled his regular appointment Sunday morning and used for his theme "Let Us Reason."
A delicious dinner was served by the women of the church to the invited guests. In the afternoon the young people of Home Baptist Church of Jackson gave a timely and wonderful program.

Paul W. Taylor has returned to Chicago after spending two weeks as guest of Mrs. Addie Harmon, Mrs. Ora Cooper and Mrs. Anna Lee Kirby.
Mrs. Dorothy Jean Carver and children have returned from Knoxville after visiting their aunt, Mrs. Beatrice Carver.
Congratulations! J. F. Taylor, son, of Mrs. Nannie Taylor and Herman Taylor, has been elected principal of Napier School at Nashville. Mr. Taylor will have 20 teachers on his faculty.
The Sunshine Band of the St. Paul Baptist Church had a picnic Saturday evening on the lawn of Mrs. Mary F. Dickerson on Derryberry St. A wonderful time was reported.
Jake Parker is a patient at Kennedy Vetern Hospital at Memphis.
Murray Flake, a tire carrier, had the misfortune in getting his left foot broken Tuesday when several tires fell on him.
Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Beasley and daughters, Rhoda Jean Beasley and Barbara Beasley have moved to Jackson. Mr. Beasley has been elected principal of a 20 teacher school at Bemis.
We regret in seeing the Beasleys leave they have been a great assets to our town. Much success is wished for them.

Services for Freddy Oceanus Fisher were Thursday at Luray CME Church with Rev. A. L. Wade officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Fisher died Sunday in his home on Old Decaturville Road after an illness of several years.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mildred Fisher; mother, Mrs. Appy Arnold; seven children, three brothers, Adell Arnold of the Marines, J. D. Arnold of Lexington, Varnell Arnold of Detroit; two sisters, Mrs. Cassie McCullough of Rock Springs Road and Mrs. Willie Mae Ross of Detroit.

The Montgomery Tigers opened the football season Thursday night with the powerful Booneville team and lost by a score of 22-0.
Services for R. D. Hall were Tuesday at Luray CME Church with Rev. A. L. Wade officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Cunningham Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Hall died suddenly after a heart attack Sunday. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Vadie Hall, and son, Matthew Hall.

A large crowd attended the community musical program at Montgomery School Sunday evening. Choirs during the singing were St. Paul, Pilgrim Rest and Pleasant Hill Baptist Choirs, Lewis Chapel and Key's Chapel Methodist Choirs, Montgomery Chorus and Montgomery Boy's Chorus.
Willie H. Lee, a former student at Montgomery, a science teacher at Lewisburg High School was guest speaker and gave a very inspiring and challenging address. A wonderful time was reported.

Services for Mrs. Mary Lou Montague Pitts were Sunday at St. James Methodist Church in Clifton with the Rev. Bryant Walker officiating. Burial was in the Lizard Lake Cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Pitts, who was 75, died early Thursday morning at Lexington-Henderson Co. Hospital after an illness of two years.
She was born and reared in Wayne County. She was a Methodist. She leaves three sons, Esaw Campbell and Rex Pitts both of Lexington and Raleigh Pitts of Benton Harbor, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Watson of Benton Harbor, Mich. and Mrs. Elsie Johnson of Lexington, 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren five nieces and one nephew.

Mrs. Mary Yarbro has returned from Lexington-Henderson Co. Hospital where she was treated for arthritis. She is showing improvement.
Mrs. Joe Ann Henry is a patient at Nashville Hospital where she underwent surgery.
Mrs. Lucille Kizer's infected right eye has improved after being treated at Jackson Clinic.
Services for William Bill Pearson were Sunday at Mt. Tabor Methodist Church with the Rev. Frank Holmes officiating. Burial was in Cathey Cemetery with Cunningham and Grover Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Pearson, who was 84, died in his home Wednesday after an illness of several years. He was a Methodist.
He leaves two sons, Frazier Pearson of Lexington and Walter Lee Pearson of Grand Rapid, Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. Birdie Mae Timberlake, Mrs. Bessie Williams both of Lexington, Mrs. Essie McKnight of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Mabel Clanton of Rockford, Ill.; 22 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren and 31 great great grandchildren.
The Rev. J. L. Burkley filled his regular appointment at the St. Paul Baptist Church Sunday morning and preached a forcible sermon using for his subject "Be Ready."
A large crowd was present at St. Paul Baptist Church Sunday night to hear the community chorus in a very unique musical program under directions of Mrs. Mary F. Dickerson, Mrs. Ollie S. Pearson and Mrs. Lorene Harmon.
The Montgomery School Band gave a great performance Saturday at the centennial in Henderson Saturday.
They climaxed the occasion by marching around court square after returning home.
Mrs. Catherine Ross and son, Landers Kirby spent the weekend in Nashville with her sister, Mrs. Virginia Lee Spicer.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Douglas were the honored guests at a kitchen shower on Friday night, when Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Thomas entertained in their lovely home on Franklin Ave.
Those present were Mrs. Levia Johnson, Mrs. Addie Harmon, Mrs. Evergene Cooper, Mrs. Lizzie Mae Douglas, Mrs. Alma Ruth Delk, Mrs. Bessie Prather, Libby Douglas, Maurice Douglas, Phyllis Thomas, Charlie Kizer, Tony Delk and the writer.
For refreshments, tuna fish sandwiches, ice cream, cake and Cokes were served by the hostess and co-hostess.
Many useful and valuable gifts were received by the honored guests and they expressed their thanks and appreciation to everyone present.

Mrs. Ella Mae Douglas and Mrs. Ada Douglas have returned from San Francisco after visiting several weeks with their sons, Howard Douglas and Genie Douglas. A wonderful and pleasant time was enjoyed.
Mrs. Dorthy Kizer has returned from Buffalo, N. Y. after spending two pleasant weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Herod.

A large crowd of Sunday School classes, superintendents and teachers of the St. Paul Baptist Church, Lewis Chapel Methodist Church and Key's Chapel Methodist Church met in a union meeting at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Sunday morning. A great and wonderful time was reported.

Congratulations to Miss Georgia Watson the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Kizer, who was married to Joe Henry Stanford, the son of Mrs. Blondell Stanford, on last Monday. Judge Clyde Reeves performed the ceremony. A long and happy life is wished for them.

Services for Will Christian, widely known and highly respected citizen of Henderson County were Wednesday evening at Key s Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. J. L. Burkley officiating. Burial was in Lexington Cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Christian, who was 88 died in his home on Barnhill St. He had been ill for several years. He was a Methodist. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Etta Christian, a stepson Earlie B. Donald both of Lexington; two nieces, Mrs. Ila Garden of Clifton; Mrs. Lellar Davis of Canton, Ohio; two nephews, Curry Christian of Clifton; and Clyde Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind.
Mrs. Dora Pearson of Memphis is here to spend the winter with her sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Young.

Mrs. Addie Harmon, Mrs. Catherine Ross, Arthur Cooper and Walter Jean Watson accompanied the writer on last Tuesday to see her mother, Mrs. Ora Cooper a patient at Western State Hospital, who is showing some improvement.
Young People Day was observed recently at the Lewis Chapel Methodist Church. Mrs. Seldom J. Teague was guest speaker and used for her subject "Have an Aim in Life." A wonderful time was reported.

Leroy Parker of Kansas City, Mo., a former Henderson Countian was killed on last Sunday evening when his car was struck at a red light in the downtown section of Kansas City after another car ran a red light signal. Services were Thursday evening at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Rev. O. T. Betts of Jackson officiating. Burial in Timberlake Grove Cemetery, Parham Funeral Home, Parsons, in charge. He was 28. He was a Baptist and a veteran.
He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Buddie Parker of Lexington; two brothers, D. T. Parker of Peoria, Ill; John Allen Parker of Kansas City, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. Ardell Green of Peoria, Ill, Mrs. Ella Mae Bowman, Mrs. Avella Thomas, and Miss Clara Parker all of Lexington.

Services for Mrs. Lydia King, widely known and respected citizen of Henderson County, were Sunday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Rev. W. M. Monroe officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Parham Funeral Home, Parsons in charge. Mrs. King died early Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary K. Raspberry on Decaturville Road after a week illness. She was 89 and a Baptist.
She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Mary K. Raspberry of Lexington; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Scott of Chicago; a grandson, John Thomas Raspberry and a great granddaughter, Rodney Raspberry both of Lexington.

Mrs. Louise Stanford had the misfortune in getting her leg broken Saturday night, when the car driven by her brother, James Taylor lights went out enroute to Lexington coming from Paducah. Mrs. James Taylor, Mrs. Dollie Taylor and Mrs. Maggie Jones were occupants in the car received minor cuts and bruises. Mrs. Stanford is being hospitalized in Jackson General Hospital where she will undergo surgery. We are sorry to hear of this great tragedy and hope her a speedy recovery.

The Missionary Society of the St. Paul Baptist Church met Thursday evening in the home of Mrs. Addle Harmon on Franklin Ave. Mrs. Elsie Johnson presided ever the meeting. A very timely and appropriate devotional was given by Mrs. Lucille Kizer, with Mrs. Etta Christian topic lender, doing a wonderful job. The society was dismissed with the Missionary Creed.
Mrs. Jessie B. Trice and Mrs. Addie Harmon were in Jackson Friday evening for the meeting of the Ladies Improvement Club. Mrs. Mary J. Wadley accompanied them.
The Sunshine Band of the St. Paul Baptist Church enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving dinner Friday night in the hone Mrs. Mary Francis Dickerson on Derryberry St. The menu consisted of turkey with all of the trimmings.
Ben Thorpe is a patient at Lexington-Henderson County Hospital where lie was taken Friday evening following a cave in that broke two of his ribs when he was working on a sewage line in Perryville. He is showing improvement.
Mrs. Lizzie Mae Douglas, Mrs. Jerledia Phelps, Mrs. Alma Ruth Delk, Mrs. Julia Mae Thomas, Tony Delk, Olivia Douglas, Maurice Douglas, Phyllis Thomas and Thomas Douglas were called Saturday to Milwaukee because of the serious condition of their brother and uncle D. L. Douglas. Walter Jean Watson accompanied them.

Mrs. Margie C. Williams of Memphis a former Henderson Countian is in a Memphis hospital suffering serious injuries she received when her car went out of control, after having a blow out and hitting another car Saturday night Her left leg and arm were broken. She also had a minor cuts and head injuries. Her mother, Mrs. Odessa Westbrook and sister, Mrs. Mary Francis Dickerson are at her bedside. We are very sorry to hear of this great tragedy. We hope and pray for a speedy recovery.

Eddie Bank Mays, a senior at Lane, majoring in mathematics, minoring in chemistry, has served as treasurer of the science seminar, He is a member of the Young Men s Senate, mathematics club and scholastic honor society. He is listed in Who s Who of the college.

Services for Buddie Mayo, retired farmer and highly respected citizen of Henderson County were Friday afternoon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. L. H. Swinney officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Mayo, who was 75 died Wednesday in his home in the Pleasant Hill community. He had been ill for several years with a heart condition. He was a Baptist, deacon and a great Bible reader.
He leaves six sons, Jake Mayo of Detroit, Mich., Paul W Hard Mayo of Knoxville, Paul Edward Mayo, Pumpie Mayo, Harold Mayo, Bill Mayo all of Lexington, five daughters; Mrs. Lura Kizer of Knoxville, Mrs. Earline Parker of Detroit, Mich., Miss Mildred Mayo, Mrs. Bessie Prathier. Mrs. Mae Cathon Douglas all of Lexington, three sisters, Mrs. Roper Sheppard of Denmark, Mrs. Levia Mackey and Mrs. Essie Ellis both of Lexington, 20 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Jane Corbitt, widely-known and highly respected citizen of Henderson County were Sunday at Luray Methodist Church with Bro. John Dethron officiating. Burial was in McHaney Cemetery with Stephenson and Shaw Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Corbitt died Friday iii her home in the Luray community. She was 83. She was a believer of the Church of Christ, a great conversationalist and Bible reader.
She leaves four sons; John Corbitt, Edward Corbitt both of Indianapolis, Ind., Lance Corbitt of Nashville, Ola Corbitt of Luray, four daughters. Mrs. Mary Jane Ferguson, Mrs. Mary Bell Williams both of Luray, Mrs. Margie Gill of Paducah, Ky., Mrs. Flemon Simms of Mt. Clemens, Mich., two brothers, John Hendricks of Beech Bluff, Jim Hendricks of Jackson, 32 grandchildren 24 great grandchildren and 24 great great grandchildren.

The Royal Ladies Better Improvement Club met in the home of Mrs. Lillain Parker of Jackson Friday evening. Members present from Lexington were Mrs. Addle Harmon, Mrs. Jessie B. Trice and Mrs. Mary J. Wadley accompanied them. A beautiful Christmas setting was used to decorate the room. Mrs. Parker served a very delicious turkey dinner with all of the trimmings.
The Community Beautification Club had its December meeting Friday evening in the home of Mrs. Mae L. Johnson of Montgomery Courts, whose room was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. Mrs. Annie Mae Cathey presided over the meeting. Edna Jo Johnson had charge of the Christmas program. Sunshine gifts were exchanged by club members. After the meeting, Mrs. Johnson served a very delicious party plate assisted in serving by her daughters, Edna Jo Johnson and Christine Johnson.
Services for Jesse Lee Pearson of the Cedar Grove community were Sunday evening at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Mosley of Union City officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Parham Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Pearson, who was 35, died late Tuesday night after he was shot in the leg and bled to death before medical aid could be reached. He had served in the Army. He leaves his father, Lonnie Pearson of Lexington; his mother, Mrs. Elnora Pearson, of Huntingdon; one sister, Mrs. Maxcine McGill of Lexington; two aunts, Mrs. Eva White of Galesburg, Ill., Mrs. Gertie Westbrook of Columbus, Miss., five uncles, two nephews and one niece.

Miss Evergene Pearson was carried to Lexington-Henderson Co. Hospital Saturday after being shot in the back by Allen Boren. Her condition is fair.
