PHELPS CEMETERY

Phelps Cemetery is a small, mixed-race cemetery on the east side of Brown School Road, a few hundred yards south of Middlefork Creek. Black burials are in the eastern half of the cemetery. White burials lie in a single row on the western side of the cemetery. The markers for the white Phelps family all are similar and appear to have been erected at the same time in the early 20th century. There are 5 or 6 temporary marker plates with no information.

David Donahue recorded Phelps Cemetery March 28, 2004. Cratis Wadley recorded Phelps Cemetery in 1976. His record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976), Vol. II, p. 382. Jonathan K. T. Smith recorded black burials at Phelps Cemetery in 1995. The cemetery appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Henderson County, Tennessee.
