McHANEY CEMETERY

McHaney Cemetery is located in southwest Henderson County on the north side of John Pope Road about 1.3 miles north of the Huron settlement. Reached by field road from John Pope Road. The last burial here seems to have been in 1999. The cemetery is full. It is also badly overgrown. There are several hundred unmarked graves here.

David Donahue recorded McHaney Cemetery on March 4, 2004. Two earlier records of the cemetery exist. Jonathan K. T. Smith recorded McHaney Cemetery in 1995. It appears in his Tombstone Inscriptions from Black Cemeteries in Henderson County, Tennessee, pp. 29-30, 45. This is referred to as Smith in notes below. Smith also noted burials known from death certificates. Alicia Adcox and Joe Burkhead recorded the cemetery in 1976. Their record appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, Tennessee, 1976), Vol. I, pp. 167. This is referred to as Adcox and Burkhead in notes below.
