PLEASANT HILL CEMETERY
(Adkisson Cemetery) (includes Montgomery Family Cemetery)

Hand-colored photograph from the collection of Brenda Kirk Fiddler.
Note mussel shells covering Aaron family graves.

This cemetery is located across the road from Pleasant Hill Methodist Church on Brooksey Road about 8 miles south of Decaturville. It is labeled as "Adkisson Cem" on the U.S.G.S. Thurman quadrangle (1972). The cemetery probably is the second largest cemetery in Decatur County. While third-place Parsons Cemetery has more markers, Pleasant Hill Cemetery is much older and has dozens of older unmarked and fieldstone marked graves, something not seen in the mainly twentieth-century Parsons Cemetery. Pleasant Hill Cemetery is very well maintained. In 1995 the Montgomery Family Cemetery was created behind the church. Its markers are included both within the list below and separately at the end o the list.

David Donahue recorded Pleasant Hill Cemetery December 27-28, 1991; updated it December 28, 1996; and checked and updated it April 2002.

An earlier record of this cemetery made by Margarett Alexander and Blanche Tuten is dated July 29, 1976. Their record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records published by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 1-19. This is referred to as UDC transcription in the notes below. Alexander and Tuten noted 392 graves, 78 unmarked, in 1976. A 1980 addendum brought the total to 451 graves. The cemetery grew 15 percent in four years. This cemetery continues to grow rapidly.
