MT. CARMEL CEMETERY

Mt. Carmel Cemetery is a very old mixed-race cemetery. Falling at a map corner, the cemetery is indicated on the U.S.G.S. Bath Springs (1972), Clifton (1972), Perryville (1986), and Pope (1973) quadrangles. There are several hundred unmarked graves here. Many fieldstones remain in place. Many more have been gathered into large piles of stones. Several graves are marked by rock cairns.

Like many antebellum church cemeteries, Mt. Carmel was a mixed race cemetery. Black burials took place at the rear of the cemetery along the southern fence, with the most recent in black burials in the southeast corner.

David Donahue recorded Mt. Carmel Cemetery in 1994, updated it December 27, 1996; and checked and updated it July 4-5, 2004. Margarett Alexander and Blanche Tuten recorded Mt. Carmel Cemetery on August 1, 1976. Their record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records published by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, 337-352. Reference is made to their work where appropriate. Alexander and Tuten note "at lease 200 unmarked graves."
