DECATURVILLE CITY CEMETERY
This cemetery, located on the hill three blocks north of the courthouse square, has long been the principal cemetery serving white families of Decaturville. It also seems to be the largest cemetery in the county, at least in terms of carved markers, though Pleasant Hill and Union may be larger in terms of total burials. Decaturville City Cemetery dates to the mid-1840s. The area at the top of the hill west of the stairs (formerly an access drive) is the oldest. Most burials here would have been marked by fieldstones. However, the fieldstone have been removed and the space has been reused. All burials in this area since 1950 are reusing space, as can be seen as the post-1950 markers (Alexander, Butler, Holt, Howard, Johnson, Taylor) are surrounded by markers a century older. For example of the reuse of space, three small markers with the letter K have been set out in a row to reserve space. There are already four unmarked burials in this row. Also, a double marker (with burials) and space holders have been placed four feet in front of a row of cedar stumps marking the head positions of early burials. The new burials and future burials overlie older burials.
The area west of the stairs was getting full by the 1870s, and the area the top of the hill east of the stairs came into at that time. The area on the southern slope east of the stairs was in use by 1905. The area on the southern slope west of the stairs was in use by 1910. In 2000 a new area south of the original cemetery in the block between N. Whiteoak and W. Pine was opened.
David Donahue recorded this cemetery October 16, 1990; updated it May 1995; and checked and updated it November 2003.
Margarett Alexander recorded this cemetery on October 17, 1976. Her record appears in Decatur County, Tennessee Cemetery Records produced by the Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, Tennessee, 1984, pp. 165-198. This is referred to as "Alexander" in the notes below.
