GREER CEMETERY

To reach this cemetery turn east onto House Church Road from Highway 220 south of Atwood, Tennessee, and drive about 2.1 miles to Clay Farm Road; turn right onto the latter road and drive about 2.5 miles to the driveway of Mr. Lotee Hillsman. The cemetery is located about .5 mile to the northeast of his dwelling. The cemetery is on Mr. Hillsman's farm; long ago it was part of the Peter Newbill farm.

According to Mr. Lotee Hillsman (born 1924) his paternal grandparents, Dempsey Hillsman (1864-1933) and Polly Hillsman (1866-c1930), are buried here as well as RAMON, son of Henry and Alma Hillsman (died about 1936). Mr. Hillsman told the present writer that his great-grandfather, also named Dempsey Hillsman, was born in bondage to the white Hillsmans /possibly John Hillsman/ near Trezevant, Tennessee. (He appears in the 1900 U.S. census as having been born in July 1822; his wife, Reatha, as born in March 1840; married forty years; seven children, three living.)
