NEWMAN, MARTIN, KEITHERLAND

My great grandfather was George MARTIN. His wife's name was Rachel, possibly NEWMAN. (Both born in TN) Old family stories say her father(born in England) had a plantation before the Civil War and herfamily disowned her for marrying George. They are on the 1880 ARCensus and probably married about 1875. Supposedly their firstchild, Sam, was born at Lynchburg, TN. Another old story was thatGeorge was dropped off at the MARTIN (George and Sarah) family houseon the doorstep in a basket as an infant. Some say his real lastname was KEITHERLAND. Please help me if you can. Information fromthe 1860 and 1870 TN Census would probably be very helpful. As youcan tell, we don't have much to go on.

All Census records with references to his family state that he was born in TN and would have been born in mid to late 1790s.
