Cumberland Shed Cemetery

Our thanks again to the PCH&GS for their generous donation of research material to this Polk County, TN site.

Cumberland Shed Cemetery Inscriptions From WPA Records (1940) Copied here by Marian Presswood as transcribed by WPA workers in 1940 and as typed by Mrs. Sudie Clemmer, (we think.) In any event, we have left typing and spelling errors as they were, which may account for the different spellings of names such as Mercer, Merser, Marcer, etc.

Cumberland Presbyterians were among the early settlers in the Ocoee community. In 1839 the Rev. John Tate, from Monroe County, Tennessee, held the first revival service under a brush arbor in the Ocoee Campground. In 1841 the Rev. Joseph Peeler and the Rev. David Cobb held a similar revival at this brush arbor. At the close of this camp meeting a group of families led by Samuel Parks and William Henry decided to establish a Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ocoee. Both Parks and Henry served as charter elders in this new church, which was named the Ocoee Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

It is believed that the Cumberland Shed was constructed sometime between 1839 and 1842, and originally was named Ocoee Campground. The first record of religious service being held at the Cumberland Shed is 1842. The purpose of the Shed was to serve as a meeting place for church services and to hold camp meetings. It was probably also used as an old field school for a couple of months of each year. It was located exactly on the watershed between Ocoee and Conasauga Rivers, which is known as the Tennessee Valley Divide.

On July 13, 1847, Cary A. Armstrong donated one and one-fourth acres of land to William Henry, James Douglass, Alvin Logan, and Euclid Waterhouse, trustees of the Ocoee Cumberland Presbyterian Church upon which the Cumberland Shed was build. The floor was covered with straw and services were conducted in the form of a camp meeting. When church services extended into the evening, candles were used to light the interior and the outside was kept bright by burning pine knots. The constituency of the church finally became so large that Shed was expanded to accommodate 1,000 persons.

In late 1860 John Coffee Williamson recorded in his diary that he had attended two camp meetings, one at Cookson's Creek, and the other at the Cumberland Shed. He reported that Father Elias Gibson preached at Old Fort a very long sermon, and concluded, "I never in all my life seen such a meeting before. All of the women shouted, many of the little girls and boys got religion, which they will beyond a doubt keep until they get home."

The Rev. Hiram Douglas served as the first pastor of the church. Douglas was named Moderator of the General assembly of the entire Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1865. It is said that after hearing Rev. Douglas preach, President Andrew Johnson remarked, "Douglas is nearer the ideal of a preacher than any man I have ever heard preach." In 1868 the Ocoee Church property was valued at $1,000, with a membership of 400. In 1869 this congregation and the Benton Cumberland Presbyterian church agreed to pay jointly the Rev. S. H. Henry $250 to serve each church on a half-time basis for the next year. In 1906 the Ocoee Cumberland Presbyterian Church, under the pastorate of the Rev. John Morgan Wooten, voted to reunite with the Presbyterian Church of the USA. A new church building was constructed in 1944. The Rev. Frank Tufvander served as the last regular pastor of the church, retiring in 1955. Rev. Charles W. Hayes served briefly as pastor with the last church service being held in 1956. The Ocoee Cumberland Presbyterian Church was the parent body of the Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Chatsworth, Georgia.

Many of the pastors who served at the Ocoee church also served or held revivals at the Sumach Church. Some of the pastors of the Ocoee Cumberland Presbyterian Church were: Hiram Douglas, Allison Templeton, S H. Henry, Robert A. McClary, T. M. Johnson, Thompson Ashburn, J.L. Milburn, J. O. Whitener, O.B. McClary, Isaac A. McClary, John Morgan Wooten, William U. Griffith, Frank Tufvander, and Charles W. Hayes.
