MANTOOTH FAMILIES -  RHEA, MEIGS AND POLK COUNTIES, TENNESSEE

Samuel Mantooth was born about 1799 in Cocke County, Tennessee, the son of Thomas “Cherokee Tom” Mantooth and Elizabeth Pharris.   Early Tennessee marriage records reflect that he married “Lethy Farris”, April 1, 1819 in Rhea County, Tennessee.

He is first found in the 1830 census of Rhea County Tennessee with his wife and four children.    By the time of the 1840 census, he was living in Meigs County, Tennessee with his wife and seven children.  Before 1850 he moved his family to Conasauga in Polk County, Tennessee where he acquired land near the Conasauga River.

The children of Samuel and Leitha Pharris Mantooth were:

Born December 26, 1836 in Meigs Co., TN.  He married Elizabeth Rebecca Gordon about 1863.   Upon her death, he married Celia G. Holland about 1870.  His third wife was Dicey Anne Coley who he married December 26, 1844 in Conasauga, Polk Co., TN.   He died October 13, 1910 in Ocoee, Polk Co., TN.

7.  Elizabeth Mantooth

Born 1840 in Meigs Co., TN.   She married Reuben Fletcher January 31, 1866 in Cleveland, Bradley Co., TN.  She died April 14, 1900 in Whitfield Co., GA.

Last Will and Testament of Samuel Mantooth

July 27, 1862

County Court, April Term 1880

I, Samuel Mantooth, being of sound mind and disposing memory and knowing the certainty of death and the uncertainty of life, I therefore make my last will and testament.

First, I will and bequeath my soul to my God who gave it.

Second, that any burial and funeral expense be paid out of my effects.

Third, that all my just debts be paid and then my daughter, Hetty who has intermarried with Robert Mantooth have one horse out of my estate equal in value with horses that I have given the rest of my children that have left me. And the said Robert and Hetty to account to my estate for the $124 which I paid out in the purchase of a piece of land where the said Robert and Hetty now lives containing 100 acres. The right of said land is in my name, by their accounting for the $124 I will the rites to be vested in them and their heirs. Also, the land where my son Calvin Mantooth lives, their rite is in my name. I want him to have said land by accounting to my estate for the sum of $200, then the rite of said land to be vested in the said Calvin Mantooth and his heirs.

And then my son, Robert Mantooth has paid $15 towards land which I want him to have said $15 paid back to him out of my estate. And then any children that has not left me, I want them to have a horse out of my estate to make them equal with the rest of my children. My son, D. H. Mantooth to account for ten dollars that I paid towards a horse then the said D. H. And at her death, it is to be equally divided between all of my children or their lawful heirs as the case may be, to wit. Calvin, Robert, Thomas, Hetty, D. H., Hugh, Elizabeth and Sarah Mantooth.

Leaving William Maxwell and S. E. Browder executors of my will

Signed:

John, 5, TN

Notes:   John Mantooth (b. abt 1811, Cocke Co., TN) was oldest son of John Mantooth (b. 1789 VA) and Betsy Burke.    John Mantooth (b. 1789 VA) was the brother of Samuel Mantooth (b. 1799 Cocke Co., TN), who lived his adult life and died in Polk County, TN.  Therefore, the John Mantooth (b. abt. 1811) living in Polk Co., TN in 1850 was the nephew of the Samuel Mantooth already living in Polk Co., TN.   Samuel's son, Calvin, was John Mantooth's  first cousin, and it was in honor of his first cousin, that John named his first son, Calvin.   John Mantooth (b. abt. 1811) was listed in the 1840 census of Cocke County, TN.  He lost his wife and four daughters before 1850. In that year's census he was living in the Old Fort community of Polk County with a second (or third) wife, Sopha, age 34, a native of North Carolina, and five children: Jasper, 12, Newton, 10, Suffroney (Sophronia), 8, John, 5, and Mary, 2. In the next ten years three more children were born in Tennessee. The 1860 census listed them as: Andrew, 8, Thomas J., 6, and James M., 3. Between the birth of James M. and the taking of the 1860 census the family moved from Polk County to the Mill Creek Township in Franklin County, AR. John certainly settled in Polk County before 1842, for on November 4 of that year he signed an election bond in that county.  (From article by Brenda Schwall)
