Organized in 1833, Troy Cumberland Presbyterian Church made little progress before the Civil War. Early pastors were E. D. Farris, Rev. Jo McLeskey and J. B. Calhoun.

Reuben Burrow held a great revival in the yard of the R. H. Marshall home near the church. With no belfry, the brass bell was swung from one of the locust trees and, while small, could be heard for up to five miles. The church grew after the Burrow meeting and later an organ and choir were added.

About 1878 D. T. Waynick came to the church and he married Ella Bright, daughter of Dr. David Bright of Troy. At some point he went to the Chelsea CP Church in Memphis and returned to Troy in 1902. Rev. Buchanan served while Waynick was in Memphis. Other ministers: W. H. McLeskey, 1900-01; Jas D. White, 1903 - ?; R. L. Keathley, 1908; C. W. Burroughs, 1912; J. A. McIlwain, 1918-19; E.
