Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Campground was organized in 1830. Some of the chartercampgrnd.jpg (65765 bytes) members were Wm. McCullom and wife, Wilford Farris, Sr., Wm. Pickard and wife, Sam Sampson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Walls and Mr. Farris. This is supposedly the location of the first church in Obion County.    Rev. Jack Ward; 1860-1881 Rev. John A Dunlap, J. N. Bryson, J. G. Braley, George McIlwaine and John A. McIlwaine. Church records show the following to have made profession of religions: James Harper, E. D. Farris, R. H. Marshall and the elder Garrison.

wwilson.jpg (14722 bytes)Obion County History,  Vol. 1, p. 434 it is written that a Methodist Church was organized in 1830 in the home of William Mitchell Wilson and his wife Rebecca with 7 charter members.   Rebecca
was the daughter of Thomas and Lucy Lawson Wilson and first cousin of her husband, William.  In early  1823 William and Rebecca settled on a portion of the 4800 acre land grant and April 6, 1823 their son, Thomas D. Wilson was born, the first white child in what would
soon be Obion County.  Col. Wilson's home was also scene of the organization of the county and court met there until the courthouse was built.  Col. Wilson donated 14 acres for a church and cemetery which has been known as Campground for many years.

He died in 1837 and Rebecca in 1885,  both are buried at
Campground

August 2000, Bert Smith <bertsmith@click1.net>   I am now the administrator of Campground Cemetery in Troy, Tennessee. I have hand written records, and if I see anything concerning the cemetery, I'll try to reply. I don't know when I'll have time right now to get them typed up. When I do, I'll ask what to do with the file.  The cemetery is well kept now and is in good shape due in large part to the efforts of Roy and Lacye Green. Roy is dead now, and Lacye is in a nursing home. Her son, who lives in Nashville, gave the responsibility to me because I live in the area and have family buried there. You can forward inquiries about Campground to me.
