PERSONS BURIED AT
JAMES EDMUND BAILEY
Photo shared by great-granddaughter Cary Bailey
Photo was taken by Matthew Brady and is part of the Smithsonian Collection
1. James Edmund Bailey is the ONLY C’villian (so far) to serve in the U.S. Senate.
2. He was elected to fill the unexpired senatorial term of Pres. Andrew
Johnson when Sen
Johnson died in office, 1877. (Pres Johnson is the ONLY president (so far) to have run and won a seat in the senate AFTER he served as president!)
3. Remember Sen Bailey was uncle to Charles Henry Bailey, depicted on
the Confederate monument.
