Madisonville Democrat, Wednesday, July 3, 1935: "Madisonville Route Two---The sudden death of Mrs. George Croft on Wednesday evening of last week, was quite a shock to our people, although she had been in failing health for several years. Interment was in Notchey Creek Cemetery the day following." _______________________________________________________ Madisonville Democrat, Wednesday, July 24, 1935: "In Loving Memory---On Wednesday evening, June 26, the dark angel of death came and visited in the home of Mr. George Croft and claimed for its victim his loving wife, Betty. Betty was a daughter of Mr. John Watson and was born Feb. 20, 1884. She died June 26, 1935, being 51 years, 4 months and 6 days old at the time of her death. She was married to George Croft Feb. 24, 1902. To this union, 10 children were born, 6 girls and 4 boys; Mrs. Delsie Lee, Mrs. Stella Torbett, Mrs. Annie Watson, Mrs. Minnie Moses, Mrs. Dollie Mae Cook and Gortha, Roy, Johnnie and two children, a boy and a girl died some time ago. She leaves to mourn her departure all these children and a husband; one half-sister, Mrs. Nora Harrill, a step-mother, Mrs. Sarah Watson and one full brother, Tom Watson and 5 half-brothers, Riley, Sam, Alfred, all of Madisonville; Dallas Watson of Indiana and Bob Watson of Ohio, and a host of relatives and friends who mourn her loss. Betty was a good Christian woman. She was friendly and always met her friends with a smile. She was a sweet mother, and a good, kind neighbor to live by. She numbered her friends by her acquaintances, and she tried to live every day just alike, so as to make friends with everyone. She prayed a prayer the evening that she died that if it took her life to bring her children to the Lord, she wanted Him to take her away. So when she sat down to the supper table to eat supper, she fell over dead. So you see how quickly anyone can be taken away. "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; Blessed be the name of the Lord." We hated to give her up, I must surely say, but we are going to try to live so that we can meet Betty some better day. How could we stand beside the grave and see the covering over you, were it not for the comforting thought God gave to all, that obey His word which is: Somewhere the sun is shining, somewhere the song-birds dwell, somewhere with Christ she's living, God lives, and all is well. Lonely are our hearts and sad are our homes, but oh! A brighter home than ours for Heaven is now her home. Weep not my dear ones for me, for I'm going to a country you see where I cannot come back to you but you can come to me. Funeral services were conducted at the Notchey Creek Church by Rev. J.E. Vaughn, Rev. John Harris, and Rev. L.N. Patterson. Burial was in the cemetery there. Floral offerings were not so many but were very beautiful. Dear Betty, since with us you cannot stay, you've marked the way before us, God help us walk the narrow way, to the home now waiting for us, that with you we may sometime dwell at home with Christ our Savior, and enjoy the bliss of endless life and the glories of God's favor. The golden gate swung open. A gentle voice said, "Come," and with a word unspoken, she gently entered home" ----A Sister, Mrs. Nora Harrill. __________________________________________________ Madisonville Democrat, Wednesday, April 20, 1927: "John R. Dailey, son of Daniel and Nancy Dailey, was born September 9, 1854 and died April 12, 1927, being at the time of his death 72 years, 7 months and 3 days old. He was married to Selena Dunn on February 27, 1882. To this union eight children were born; Biddie, Willie, James, Sarah, Joseph, George, Ada and John Dailey, Jr. Biddie and Willie have been dead for several years. His parents, his half-sister, Eliza, his daughter, Biddie and his son, Willie, are buried in Big Creek Cemetery, and in that cemetery, the poor, tired body of John R. Dailey was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon, April 13, 1927. Funeral services were held from Big Creek Church and were conducted by Rev. J. Henry McDaniel. His grave was completely covered over with beautiful flowers. A few days before his death, he requested that some paper flowers be made and that we have them ready. We did as he asked and combined the artificial flowers with natural flowers and with evergreens. He had suffered a partial stroke of paralysis several months ago; he had been blind for some years. Forty-eight hours before his death he had a heavy stroke of paralysis and could never speak, nor open his eyes, nor move any part of his body anymore. Now those poor, helpless white hands are folded over his breast; his poor, sightless eyes are dim in death. We did all we could for him; all that medical aid could do was done for him; his faithful wife, his children, his relatives, friends and neighbors did all that was in their power for him; but the time had come for him to pass out forever from this life and we have to be resigned to God's will, for we know that his beautiful spirit has returned to the God who gave it, and we know that God giveth His beloved sleep---we know that there remained a rest to the people of God---it is hard to give up this friend and life-long neighbor, but we know that he needs rest after so many long, weary years of suffering. He suffers no more now forever, and his eyes now behold all the glories, the splendors and the beautiful things where our Savior lives. While John R. Dailey lived in this world, the poor, the distressed and the needy always found a friend in him. No person who was down and out, forsaken, slighted and shunned by others ever failed to get a kindly greeting, a friendly hand-clasp and a gentle invitation to visit him in his home---his home where high and low, rich and poor always received a warm welcome. To John R. Dailey, Jr., I will say, "May God bless you and your mother, your brothers and sisters---May God comfort you all and may we all meet again with friends, neighbors, parents, brothers and sisters and other relatives in that land where sickness, sorrow and death can never come. This is Easter Sunday, John, and we all are observing and celebrating the day---and John, this is your father's first Sabbath day to spend in Heaven, and how beautiful and glad it is to know that your father's first Sabbath day in that bright world is Easter Sunday. Oh! Resurrection morn; Ye angels from the stars come down and bear our spirits home." In tenderness, love and sorrow. ---Georgia A. Stakely. ____________________________________________________ Madisonville Democrat, Wednesday, May 14, 1941: "J Charles Sylvester---Funeral services for J. As a pupil in the Coltharp School she was loved by her schoolmates and teachers on account of her gentle unassuming manner; winning for herself a place which can never be refilled. Ruby was converted two years ago at a meeting at the Notchey Creek Baptist Church, joined the church and was baptized with several others. She was always patient and helpful about the home just “doing” with her might what her hands found to do. Her gentle voice and sweet companionship is now missed in the home and school and by her relatives and friends with whom she associated, for Ruby is no more. After a short illness with pneumonia and other complications she breathed her last on October 19 at 1:15 P.M. A father, mother, two brothers, Raymond and Reed, two grandfathers, W.A. Torbett and Thomas Bowers, a grandmother, Mrs. W.A. Torbett, besides a host of relatives and friends, grieve her loss which we believe is her eternal gain. After a funeral at the Notchey Creek Church, conducted by Rev. J.E. Vaughn and Rev. John Morgan, the remains were laid to rest in the Notchey Creek Cemetery on Sunday, Oct. 20. Messrs. Creed Pack, Harl Price, Odus Young and Horace Coltharp served as pall bearers while the flower bearers were four of her schoolmates, Misses Mable and Faye Dailey, Jonnie Rogers and Josephine Coltharp. Before her marriage to Mr. Torbett, near a year ago, she was Mary Lou Boatner. She leaves to mourn her departure a husband, an infant son, a father and mother, Mr. & Mrs. Lester Boatner, one brother, Joe Boatner, and one sister, Mrs. Charlie Watson and a host of other relatives and friends. May God comfort the bereaved ones in their lone, sad hours." "Interesting News From Route Six---Mary Lou Boatner, was born May 19th, 1907; professed faith in Christ about three years ago and united with the Notchey Creek Church. She was married to Mr. Sam Torbett on January 1st, 1926. A little son was born to them on January 27th, 1927. Mary Lou died on Tuesday night, February 1st, 1927. Before she died, she gave her little son to her sister-in-law, Miss Mattie Torbett, and said, "Get Georgia Stakely to give my little boy a name." So while I was at their home today, I gave the lovely little baby the name of Samuel Lester. Will Millsaps, son of John Millsaps of Cedar Fork Community, was shot through the head Wed. evening of last week and died a short time later. The shooting was the result of an argument between Millsaps and Boyd Hawkins over a sausage mill on which they were grinding meat at the home of John Millsaps. Both young men are said to have drawn their guns, but Hawkins proved either the quiker or better shot of the two. A young woman by the name of Simerly, who was staying at the Millsaps home, was shot in the hip and John Millsaps, father of the dead man, was shot through the hand. A preliminary trial was set for Mon. of this week before Justice G.W. Kimbrough, but Hawkins waived his case to the higher court and his bond was set at $2,000. (In a later art. John Millsaps stated the Simerly girl wasn't living at his house, just visiting.) ___________________________________________________ Madisonville Democrat, Thursday, Dec. 23, 1954: Former Vonore Man Shoots Self after Decorating His Tree William L.
