When you e-mail me please type in the subject heading: "look-up".  We get so much mail and many are suspect as viruses.   That goes for any look-up, otherwise it could be deleted.  Thanks.

We will not look up a child who might be living in any given household of a surname such as Jones or Smith, there are simply too many to look up!

The information to be obtained from the 1920 census is: head of household, spouse if there is one, children and others living within that household.  For each name given, there is an age, single, widowed or divorced.  The first state is that person's birthplace, the second state is that of the father of that person, and the third is the mother of that person-always that order.

One thing I noticed while working on this index is that there were many married or widowed daughters living with their parents, but the census taker failed to put their married names. It is my suggestion that when you can't find the person you're seeking and you know the parents' names, you might try their listing. Also there were many step children listed under the names of their st.dad, so that'll make look-ups more difficult. Initials are very difficult to get correct so certainly keep in mind many can be wrong.

The enumerator for the old District 19 in the Coker Creek and Jalapa areas of Monroe Co. made this interesting comment:

The note listed after page 283B.

“This ends the enumeration of the old 19th District of Monroe Co. Tenn.  The land rented from A.L. Babcock, Maryville, Tenn. is a few small tracts of land cleared in what is called squatters and was done before Mr. Babcock purchased the land and is a vast mountain region the merchantable timber was cut off some 3 or 4 years back.  This accounts for there being no woodland on these tracts as the people are only allowed to use only cleared land and use only dead timber.

                          William R. Witt, enumerator

P.S. My population sheet got wet in storm and in copying  was overlooked, made out the agriculture sheet 137, sheet no 4a line 17.”  (The best I can figure out he's referring to the start of  pg. 277A, the stamped page number on the microfilm-Joy)
