Can anyone tell me if there ever was a town in McMinn County called Turley's Mills? I have a relative Samuel Elliott who was born there in 1867. I found a town with a similar name in Grainger Co. but can't find any reference to his parents ever being there.

The McMinn County Heritage Book includes a sketch #847 of Joshua MELTON b 1785 in NC or Va m Sarah MELTON 1804 Rutherford County, NC. The sketch describes Joshua and Sarah children: Mirrah, Rachel, Elizabeth, Richard, Lenoir, Margaret, and Sarah. Lenoir m Martha Huckaby and moved to McMinn County about 1835. The sketch was prepared by Edward L. Melton. Can anyone provide any information on the parents of Joshua or Sarah Melton? Do you know how to reach Edward L. Melton author of the sketch?

Looking for information on the "Battle of Athens" post WW2. Read a book by author Howard COOK titled " Swifter Than Eagles : Bill WHITE and the Battle of Athens 1946 " copy right 1980. There was also a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie titled " An American Story" aired in the early/mid 1990's based on the Battle of Athens. The teleplay was written and dircected by a John GRAY, whom I believe said he was from the area. Is anyone aware of any other publications available on the Battle?

BERRY - seeking any information on Clarence Berry born in Athens, Tennessee, about 1914. He had at least one sister and his mother's name probably was Betty. I am Dr. Richard Cantrell and I was raised in Albany, Georgia. I was born in 1954 and my father was James Howard Cantrell. He was born in March 1915 or 1916, probably in Tennessee, his father was Marion CANTRELL. He supposedly was married to a Cherokee Indian, last name FRYE or FRY. As both grandparents passed on prior to my birth and my father spoke little of them except of his Indian heritage, I have little to go on. I know that my Grandparents were married in Tennessee probably at the turn of the century give or take ten years but I don't know the county or anything like that and I know that the Cantrell's came to Tennessee from Georgia or South Carolina. He had three brothers in Co. K including Issac Martin who died at Vicksburg. I have the national archives microfilm rolls of the regiments service records, Official Records of the War,
Tennesseans in the Civil War, and most of the basic reference works . Since most official confederate army records did not survive, I am looking for letters, diaries, momentos, photos, papers, histories, etc., Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. A memorial ceremony will be conducted on Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, 1998 (I believe) at the Vicksburg, Miss. City Cemetery dedicating newly placed tomb stones for Confederate soldiers, including 31 of those from the 43rd Tenn.

I am trying to prove that Mary Ann Armstrong, wife of Andrew Baker Armstrong and mother of William Baker Armstrong, was a daughter of William Martin and Mary Jack. William Baker Armstrong was living with this family in 1860, and family tradition says he went to live with his grandfather after his mother died.
