“These loose notes summarize information found from literature research and that shared by several correspondents.  Particular credit goes to George F. Bently, Jr. (of Louisiana), Carl Wisler (Mitchellville, MD; descended from Mumford's son Thornton and Elizabeth Willis who
apparently had a short and probably unhappy marriage), and Jean Ladd, who shared in an e-mail dialog beginning in 2001.  Since there were many “Mumford Smiths,” it is not always clear to whom the notes actually refer.”

This narrative and compilation of notes deal primarily with the Mumford and descendants who migrated from Wales to Virginia, hence to Rhea (later Meigs) County Tennessee and on to Maury County, Tennessee.

Among the many “Mumford Smiths” by this reckoning are the following:

1.   Mumford I (1748-1830): None of my records indicate that he had any other wife than Catherine. And I have no record for Mumford I's parents (but I'm sure he had some!). Most sources indicate that he was Welch, by birth and/or descent, and that abt 1800 he migrated to Tennessee (Rhea/Meigs County) via Virginia (Patrick County). [Note however that there was a contemporary “Mumford Smith” in Patrick County, so that identies on records may be confounded)

2.    "Mumford Jr." (1775-1846), s/o Mumford I. Jr m. Mary Ann Blythe. He had a
brother, named William Mumford Smith.

(The “Mumford I” line continues via son John A. Smith )

3.   "Mumford II" (1805-1866), s/o John A. Smith, m. Elizabeth Rickman Bynum.

4.   "Mumford III" (1842-1923), s/o Mumford II, m. Annie Cecil.

5.   "Mumford IV" (no dates listed), s/o Mumford III.

[Note: There was a contemporary “Mumford Smith,” born abt 1774 in Patrick County, Virginia.  This Mumford also had a son Mumford, Jr., to help confuse things further!  Some notes for this line is presented very briefy in Appendix I].

“History of Meigs Co., TN, & Its people (1836-1997)”

p. 165 (article #512): Mumford Smith Family

Mumford Smith (1744/5 – Oct 1830) came from Patrick Co. VA to TN with wife Catherine Armstrong, d/o William & Catherine Armstrong of Surry Co., NC.  They had 8 children. John A., s/o Mumford, is listed in the 4th surveyors district of TN, Rhea Co., in 1808.  He bought 123.5 ac on Yellow creek. His wife Sarah S. (sic) (last name unk.) was named as guardian of Mary Ann & Ruth, minors of John A. Smith.  To this union were born 6 sons and 2 daughters.  John W. Smith (1809-1886), s/o John A. & Sarah, married Mariah Hunter (1808-1839), d/o Thomas hunter.  They had 5 children. John W. served as constable of 4th district in 1836 for the new county of Meigs; served under Capt. Miles Vernon in the Cherokee Removal (1837). Second marriage [of John W. Smith] to Sara Little

[Presumably Mumford I had 6 sons: William, Mumford, John A., Randolph, James and Thornton.]

Mumford Smith I came to Virginia from Wales, and his son John A. Smith married Sarah Margaret Williams. John A. Smith died in 1830, and is buried with his father in Smith Cemetery in Decatur, TN. Sara Margaret, his wife, died spring of 1874 and is buried at Hunter's Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant {TN}. Their children were:

Mumford II, m. Elizabeth R. Bynim (sic). [This appears to be in error, since Mumford II is the grandson of Mumford I]
Charles, m. ? Woods.
[Captain] Jack, m. Maria Hunter.
Wilson, m.? McCarned.
George, m. [2] Jane Hawk.
Ruth, m.? Stewart.
Mary, m. R.D. Ricketts.

Mumford Smith II came to Maury Co from Meigs Co when 19 years old. Note by copyist: Mumford II was Sheriff of Maury co for many years {1846-1850; see p. 758 of Goodspeed Histories of Maury, etc.}. He was the father of Mumford Smith III, b. 18-Aug-1842 - d. 1923 at Mt. Pleasant. Mumford III m. 21-Nov-1871 to Miss Anna M. Cecil. Ibid. Another entry in Maury County Cousins, p. 348: (Smith Bible, copied 30-Aug-1957 by Antoinette Bentley Henson) gives somewhat different information:

Mumford Smith I, b. 1748 in E. TN (or VA), died 1830 at Decatur, TN, buried Smith Cemetery, Meigs Co, TN, married Sara Margaret Williams, died in spring of 1847 and buried in Hunter cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, TN.
