"On Apr 3, 1789, John's father, Amos London Sr., sold to him land for a mere 5 shillings. In September 1789, his father gave John all of the moveable or perishable part of his estate - 7 horses, a wagon and gear, his plantation tools, all furniture, a little stock of 12 hogs. It was in the form of a will but given to him at that time. John paid taxes in Surry County, North Carolina until 1794." Opal London Cox, The London Family.
Elizabeth Lambert's marriage as first wife to John London is speculated in MCHQ Biographical Sketches of Early Marshall Co Families for The London Family, Vol IV, Summer 1973, No 11, pg 62. Others speculate John's first wife's name was Martha. MCHQ Biographical Sketches of Early Marshall Co Families for Hiram Wilson, Vol IV, Summer 1973, No 11, pg 61 states that Elanor (Nelly) Wilson married Nathan London, son of Amos and MARY London. This suggests that Amos' first wife was named MARY, not Martha or Elizabeth.
John had 10 children with his first wife.
"John moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he purchased land in 1799. He's listed there in the 1800 Census.
In the 1810 Census, Wilkes County North Carolina, John is listed with his first family of 10 children: 3 males under 10 years, 2 males 10 - 16, 2 males 16 -26, 2 females under 10 years, 1 female 45 & over. The mother died soon after this census
John London received NC Land Grant #2883 for 25 acres in Wilkes County, North Carolina. It was issued November 28, 1812. Book 127, page 129. The chain carriers for the survey were Joseph London and John London Jr.
John London married Permelia Cheek in Surry Co, NC on April 23, 1811 -1814 by John's friend Benjamin H. Martin. This was prior to their move to Tennessee,
John London bought 379 acres of land from Matthew G. Pickens for $800.00 on Jan.11,1818 in Maury Co.Tennessee (Later Marshall Co.TN). John immediately sub-divided this land and sold 53 acres to Amos London, 114 acres to William London, some land to Richard London and 50 acres to Thomas Parks and Sarah London Parks. He secured these purchases with notes. Thus he gave his children a start in life if they were willing to work for it.
John later purchased land in Bedford County ,Tennessee. He then traded this land for the 150 acres from William London of Stokes and Iredell County North Carolina.
John died Oct 1832 and is buried on this land in an unmarked grave. It is known as the London Cemetery on the New Lake Road southwest of Lewisburg, Tennessee.
After his death his estate was the defendant in the law suit London vs London in which Permelia claimed that her
dower had been fraudulently taken from her by John. Her dower was returned by settlement of the suit at the
Tennessee Supreme Court, Dec 1839 term. " Opal London Cox, The London Family
