The following is the last letter received by Mrs. C.C. Boss from her husband, Solomon S. Boss, Company 6th Georgia Cavalry, prior to being committed to action against Union forces near Sweetwater, Tenn., in the fall of 1863.

Dear Companion and Children,

I take this opportunity to write a few lines which leaves me in common health except cold. I have as good health here as I had at home. Hoping these few lines may come safe to hand and find you and the children well and doing well. Emily, I can’t advise you what to do for the best. I want you to buy corn if you can: I want you to sew wheat if you can and keep in good health. Put your trust in God for he will provide for them that put their trust in him. I hope by the help of God we will meet on Earth and enjoy each others company again, and spend our days together on Earth. Emily, IO can’t express my feelings . . . it is with tears I write you. I have been in hopes of getting a furlough but there is no chance yet. But I think I will get to come when the fight is finally settled. The hardships are almost more than I can bear, but I think my health is improving some. May God Bless you and children is my prayer, pray for me an your children that we may meet on earth and if we meet no more on earth, that we may meet in heaven.

You must write to me as soon as you can , direct thus, to, S.S. Boss, 6 th Georgia Calvary, Co. K in care of Capt. Napier Pegeona Brigade.

I will close, may God Bless you and don’t grieve for me.

S.S. Boss to his dear companion and children.

Singleterry is well.
