History of the O’Guin Cemetery
![]() |
The
O’Guin Cemetery was established in 1925. George
Washington and Melvina Gunter O’Guin donated the property when the family
decided they needed a cemetery for their family and community.
Lillie O’Guin Taylor, their daughter, was the first to be buried at
this location. In
1956 Edward and Cora O’Guin deeded the parcel of land to the G.W. O’Guin
Cemetery and its successors, forever. The
cemetery is located in the community of Kimmins, Tennessee, which lies on a
hilltop in the extreme northern portion of Lewis County.
A shaded country lane leads to the quiet serene area where the wind does
much of the talking. The cemetery
has withstood the blows of a modern world and one can find solitude by quietly
visiting the silent city and listening to the birds exchange conversations.
At
first glance the tombstones remind one of soldiers lined up straight and tall
for inspection. As you circle the
cemetery, they march by one by one with such names as O’Guin, Riley, Skelton,
Taylor, Coble, Anderson, Baker, Quillen, Prince, Talley, Kroll, Milan, Thompson,
Tucker, Hinson, Lynch, Devore, Scott, Goforth, Garrett, Barazsu, Lowrey, Martin,
Pace, Dickey, Kilpatrick, and Ghist. Jasper
Cooper O’Guin died during World War 1 in France.
A brave soldier who won the purple heart.
His tombstone is a memorial for the bravery he endured.
A wrought iron fence protects the O’Guin family and a concrete bench
provides a resting place to sit and ponder their lives and other family members
and neighbors of this small
community called Kimmins. The
arms of the families and community protect the cemetery like a mother who
embraces and protects her child from harm. The
Saturday before Memorial Day each year is a special time for everyone to gather,
rake leaves, mow grass, pull weeds, and add new flowers to their loved ones’
graves. A loving tribute to many
families and friends with new American flags gracing the graves of all the
veterans who served their country well. A
small shaded pond, surrounded by pine trees, reflect ones thoughts and memories
of these silent people. A simple
cemetery, but an enchanted place to rest the physical body after ones life is
over. All is well…… |
