MARBERRY CEMETERIES OF HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Submitted by John L. Marberry Box 304 1N127 LaFox Road, LaFox, IL 60147 John L. Marberry

JOHN MONROE MARBERRY, SR. FAMILY CEMETERY - TVA #30 (360411N 0875715W)

Located near Old Johnsonville on Trace Creek, Humphreys Co., TN

This is the family cemetery of John Monroe Marberry, Sr. (1823-1891) who married Hester Gould Morrisset on December 30, 1869 in Humphreys Co., TN. John M. Marberry and his brother Francis Marion Marberry (1836-abt. 1905) purchased the lands on the north-east corner of the Tennessee River and Trace Creek, overlooking Old Johnsonville. John and Francis divided these lands in 1875 with John taking the land east of the county road that ran north out of Old Johnsonville and Francis taking the lands west of the road and adjoining the Tennessee River.

There is also a Marberry family cemetery on the lands that Francis Marion Marberry owned (TVA #44). This cemetery has only one stone grave marker, there are a few small metal markers with a glass covering a paper, but none are legible. The sunken ground of the graves is the only way to see most of the graves. I have relied on the TVA record and have added notes on relationship and dates of those interred. This information was probably given to the TVA by Hester Gould Morrisset Marberry (1854 - 1938) and/or her daughter, Jennie Napier Marberry Nichols (1881 - 1957).

The Tennessee Valley Authority records for these cemeteries are listed in BOLD UNDERLINED ITALIC CAPITALS and my additions are in lower case.

FRANCIS MARION MARBERRY FAMILY CEMETERY -TVA # 44 (360419N 0875728W)

Located near Old Johnsonville on the Tennessee River and junction of Trace Creek.

This is the family cemetery of Francis (Frank) Marion Marberry (1836 - abt. 1905). Frank Marberry married Sarah Jane Thompson in 1867 and they lived and farmed these lands from about 1870 until Frank's death in the early 1900's. After Frank Marberry's death his wife Sarah moved to Nashville and may have died there.

This list is based off of the TVA's cemetery record that was made before the flooding of the Tennessee River. The TVA listing is in BOLD ITALIC CAPITALS and my notes and additions are in lower case. The Tennessee Valley Authority stated that there were six graves in this cemetery and the plat shows six, but a TVA Land Acquisition Map in 1938 says 7 graves and there are only listed five in the record. TVA's comments on this cemetery were: "These six graves were all above elevation 380, but the access was flooded. It was a very old, abandoned cemetery. All the graves were identified and remain permits executed."

1. MARBERRY, F. M., DIED 1896 - This death date cannot be correct because Frank Marberry is listed in the 1900 Census of Humphreys County, TN. Francis Marion Marberry was born June 11, 1836 in Illinois and he died about 1905 in Humphreys County, TN. He was the brother of the John Monroe Marberry, Sr. who owned the adjoining lands. Both Frank and John Marberry were the children of Francis Marberry (b. May 7, 1781, NC) and his wife, Nancy (born 1791 KY).

2. MARBERRY, ROBINSON - Robinson was one of the children of Francis Marion and Sarah Jane Marberry. He was probably young when he died.

3. MARBERRY, WILLIAM - Francis Marion and Sarah Jane Marberry had a son Willie who was born in 1873, this may be his grave.

4. MARBERRY, OLLIE - Child of Francis Marion Marberry and Sarah Jane. Birth and death dates are not known.

5. MARBERRY, CHILD - This is probably another child of Francis and Sarah Jane Marberry that died young.

The third Marberry Cemetery in Old Johnsonville area was not mapped by TVA because there was no danger of flooding in that area. However, it is shown on a June, 1938 TVA Land Acquisition Map as being on property owned by A. T. Manor. This map shows the cemetery as Marberry Cemetery, 0.05 acres, Public and containing 21 graves plus or minus. This Marberry Cemetery (360423N 0875510W) is located on Little Dry Creek on the road leading to Consolidated Aluminum (Scepter Road) at Masterson Gas Co. Road. There are no grave markers in this cemetery. This was the property that Hiram J. Marberry owned in the mid and late 1800's. Hiram J. Marberry was born May 19, 1816 and died after 1880 in Humphreys County, TN. Hiram J. Marberry is one of the graves in this cemetery, the others are probably relatives or neighbors of Hiram J. Marberry's family. Hiram was married first to Tempy and secondly to Louraney (Laura) and from the census records it appears that he had sixteen children between these two marriages.
