Published in The News-Democrat, Waverly, Tennessee not long after Sheriff Merideths death:Letter to the Editor:
There is an empty parking space in front of the Courthouse. George Fentress "Sheriff" Meredith passed into history on Friday last. A self-described peddler, Sheriff Meredith daily parked his truck in that space while he sat with his friends discussing any subject which came to mind and, incidentally, sold his wares.
As an adjunct to his business activities, the Sheriff served as my timekeeper in court. If I was even a minute late opening court or took too long a recess, he would reprimand me for my tardiness. Sheriff Merideth was the only person who could speak out in court and not go to jail for contempt.
While in his eighties, Sheriff Meredith served on one of my juries. He made his living through his business and was honest, thrift and spoke his mind with a sense of humor. Men such as he made this great nation.
Numerous humorous stories will continue to be told about Sheriff Meredith. Many of these arose from his disdain for bureaucratic regulations. He was a character in the most endearing sense of the word.
My life is richer for having known Sheriff Meredith. He was my friend and I shall miss him.
