Ollie Jane Durham BROWN
Ollie Jane Durham BROWN, 85 years old, passed away on March 29, 1999. Mrs. Brown, born in Waverly, TN, lived her whole life in Humphreys County. Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and was said to be an excellent cook. Her parents, both deceased, were Robert Calvin and Lucy Katherine Carter Durham. Surviving family members are: husband, William Walter Brown Sr., Waverly, TN; sons, Owen Brown, Raymond Brown, Dlifton Brown, Junior Brown, Danny Brown, all from Waverly Jesse Brown, (deceased); daughters, Catherine Carter, New Johnsonville, TN, Dale Hicks, Waverly; sisters, Ruth Fox, Clanton, Ala., Bertha Little, Frances McMillan, both Waverly. Surviving grandchildren of Mrs. Brown: 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren.
The Rev. Charles Alexander, Waverly and Bro. Ray Mayo, Greenbriar conducted the funeral service at Luff Bowen Chapel in Waverly, TN. Mrs. Brown was buried in the Durham Cemetery.
Worth Notes: Mrs. Brown was a member of the Halls Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church; former Sunday School teacher; excellent cook both at home and at church.

Mattie Marie Wheeler BROWN
Mattie Marie Wheeler BROWN, 84 years old, of McEwen, passed away April 25, 1999. Her parents, both deceased, were Joshua Francis and Maggie Pearl Damesworth Wheeler. Her husband, also deceased, was Grady L. Brown. Surviving family members are: sons, Jimmy Brown, Columbia, Marvin Brown, Troy; daughters, Peggy Chrisco, Wichita, Kan., Lois Wheeler, Memphis; brothers, Casey Wheeler Sr., McEwen, Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Wheeler, Memphis; sisters , Alice Wiggam, Plymouth, Mich., Hester Pruett and Stella Schultheis, Memphis, Jean Hooper, McEwen; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Tommy Street officiated at Mrs. Brown's funeral service at the Humphreys County Funeral Home. Burial was in the Wheeler Town Cemetery.
Worthy Notes: Mrs. Brown was born in Humphreys County and was a member of Hurricane Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Mary Ellen Chance
Mary Ellen Chance, 85, passed away July 24, 1997, after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 28 at Hopkins Lawyer Funeral Home in Akron, Ohio, with the Rev. Sam Rittenour officiating. Burial was at Hillside Memorial Park in Akron.
Born in Waverly, she was an Akron resident for the past 53 years. Mrs. Chance was employed as a marker with City Laundry for 40 years, retiring in 1974. She was a former member of the Akron Baptist Temple, and enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spending time with her grandkids.
Mrs. Chance was married to the late Homer Chance.,
Survivors include sons, Bill Chance of Akron, Murry Chance of Valdosta, Ga., James D. Chance, of Chardon, and James V. Chance of Clinton; daughter, Frances Walters of Chicago, Doretha Brunty of Akron and Sally Phipps of Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; 40 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother, Hubert Wright of Kenmore; and sister Minnie Brown and Willie May Baker, both of McEwen.

Gracie L. Clements
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 10, 1986, at Luff-Bowen for Mrs. Gracie L. Clements of McEwen. Mrs. Clements, age 79, died Wednesday, October 8,1986 after an extended illness.
Rev. Gerald Sexton of the Assembly of God in Dyersburg officiated at the graveside service in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Luff- Bowen Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
She was born in Humphreys County and lived here the first sixteen years of her life.She lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee until two and a half years ago, before returning to Humphreys County.
She was a retired co-owner of Clement Restaurant in Finley, Tennessee.She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Dyersburg.
She was the daughter of the late David Frank (Tink) Buchanan and the late Mollie Batton.She was the wife of the late Hugh H. Clements.
Survivors include brothers- Mr. Samuel P. Buchanan of Montgomery, Ala., Mr. David (Petie) Buchanan- Waverly, Tenn., Mr. Howard D. Buchanan-Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Wilson Dean Buchanan- Henderson, Ky. and sisters Mrs. Flossie Hicks- Waverly,Tenn., Mrs. Nancy Farrar - Nashville, Tenn.,Mrs. Goldie Claude - Waverly, Tenn.,Mrs. Ludie Headrick- McEwen,Tenn., and Mrs. Ruth Crowell - Lynchburg, Va.
Frances Janelle Cook
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 11, 1996, at the Humphreys County Funeral Home for Frances Janelle Cook of Camden. Ms. Cook, 40, died Nov. 7. Internment was at Ebenezer Cemetery, with arrangements being made by the Humphreys County Funeral Home.
Ms. Cook was a native of Humphreys County. She was a member of Pentecostal Church of True Living God. Ms. Cook was the daughter of Irene Guthrie Burns of McEwen and the late Genie Jackson. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a son, Edward Dale Campbell of Camden; step-son Steve Anthony Cook of McEwen; two daughters, Beverly Jane Campbell and Angela Leigh Cook, both of Camden; three brothers, Kenneth D. Jackson of New Johnsonville, Danny Ray Jackson of Waverly and Terry Alan Jackson of McEwen; two sisters, Imogene Rawls of Knoxville and Bertha Jane Bruce of Waverly; one step grandchild; two uncles, four aunts and several cousins. Ms Cook was preceded in death by a sister,Mary Ann Jackson and grandson Bryan Anthony Watson.

1819 - 1895 Cumberland Presbyterian Minister
COOLEY.--The Rev. D.D. Colley [sic], an aged minister of the Charlotte Presbytery, departed this life in peace June 30, 1895. He was seventy-six years old and had been for fifty years a preacher of the gospel in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He leaves a wife, ten children and many friends and relatives to mourn their loss. His funeral was preached by the Rev. Thomas F. Bowman, July 1, 1895, at Union Chapel, in the presence of a large concourse of people, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by, with proper Masonic honors.

Roffie Cunningham
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 13, 1992, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church for Roffie Merideth Cunningham of New Johnsonville.
Mrs. Cunningham, 83, died Dec. 11, following an extended illness.
The Rev. Brent Davis of New Johnsonville officiated at the service, with burial at Ebenezer Cemetery. Luff-Bowen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cunningham was born in Waverly and spent all of her life in Humphreys County. She was a retired nurses aide for Benton County Hospital, was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, and a 50-year member of Hustburg Chapter #153 Order o f the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Cunningham was the daughter of the late Bill and Mary Jane Davis Merideth. She was married to the late Jesse Flournoy Cunningham.
Survivors include a son, James F. Cunningham of Camden; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Reeves and Patricia Ann McNeil, both of New Johnsonville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alice Dee Tibbs Cunningham
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 16, 1993, at Luff-Bowen Chapel for Alice Dee Tibbs Cunningham of Waverly. Mrs. cunningham,96, died Sept. 14 following an extended illness.

Mrs. Cunningham was born in New Johnsonville and lived in Humphreys County until 1952.She moved to Memphis,then moved back to Humphreys County in 1990.Mrs. Cunningham was a self-employed nurse's aide and a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mrs. Cunningham was the daughter of the late George and Sallie Jane Mitchell Tibbs. She was married to the late Leslie Ray Cunningham.
Survivors include three sons, Herman Cunningham of Thousand Oaks,Calif., Ray Cunningham of Nashville and Bobby Cunningham of Hemet,Calif.;two daughters, Margaret Hagewood of Memphis and Jewel Davidson of Waverly; a brother, Hubert Tibbs of Humboldt; three sisters,Nettie Potts of Humboldt and Maureen Evans and Anne Dailey, both of Waverly; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Henry Clay Curtis
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 13, 1992, at Luff-Bowen Chapel for Henry Clay Curtis of Waverly. Mr. Curtis, 71. died Aug. 11, following a three-month illness.
Andrew Jarret of Waverly and Carl Long of McEwen officiated at the service with burial at McKeel Cemetery. Luff-Bowen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Curtis was born in Humphreys County and was a lifelong resident. He was an Army World War II veteran, and member of Spann Church of Christ, Waverly Eastern Star, Waverly Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Mason.
Mr Curtis was the son of the late Robert A. and Dillie Ann Bell Curtis. He was married to Catherine Woods Curtis of Waverly. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, a brother and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10, 1990, At Buckner's Dickson Funeral Home Chapel for Ura Lee Curtis of Charlotte.
Mr. Curtis, 88, died July 8, at his home.
Interment was at Dickson County Memorial Gardens. Buckner's Dickson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Curtis was a native of Humphreys County. He was a retired cross-tie inspector for the Kerr-McGee Co., and was a member of Buffalo Primitive Baptist Church.
Mr. Curtis was the son of the late John Henry and Celia Ann Fields Curtis.
Survivors include a son, Ralph Curtis of Charlotte; two daughters, Betty Elliott and Doris Hinson, both of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday,April 4,1998, at the Humphreys County Funeral Home for William E. Dailey of Waverly. Mr. Dailey, 72, died April 2. Lee Brown officiated the service, with internment at Wyly Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Humphreys County Funeral Home.
Mr. Dailey was born in Humphreys County. He was a veteran and member of Waverly United Methodist Church and American Legion. Mr. Dailey was the son of the late Hyman and Mary Jane Curtis Dailey.He was married to Ann Tibbs Dailey of Waverly.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include nephew Terry Dailey of Clarksville;and niece Teresa White of Clarksville.

Stanley Malloy Damesworth
Stanley Malloy Damesworth, 80, of Gleason died Thursday, May 1, 1997, at Volunteer General Hospital in Martin. Services for Mr. Damesworth were held Sunday, May 4, 1997, at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial was held in Ebenezer Cemetery in New Johnsonville, Tennessee. Bro. Ray Winsted and Steve Walker were the officiating ministers.
Mr. Damesworth was a retired farmer.He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Gleason.He was born october 10, 1916 in Waverly,Tennessee. Mr. Damesworth is proceded in death by three children; Grady Damesworth,Petie Damesworth, Rebecca Damesworth, parents; John Henry and Nancy Jane Smith Damesworth.
Mr. Damesworth is survived by his wife, Bonnie Jane Jackson Damesworth, five sons; Eston Damesworth of Gleason, John Damesworth of Dyersburg, Tony Damesworth of Gleason, Jimmy Damesworth of Dyersburg, five daughters; Edith Wynn of Paris, Judy Hammonds of Dyersburg, Linda Tabor of Hayt, Missouri, Debra Lock of Dyersburg, Nancy Blevens of Newbern, one sister; Earlene Chappell of New Johnsonville, twenty- nine grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 17, 2000 at Buffalo United
Methodist Church for Mary Elizabeth Duncan of Hurricane Mills.
Mrs. Duncan, age 80, died July 14.
Rev. Raymond Cockerham officiated at the service with burial at
Jones-Owens-Mayberry Cemetery. Humphreys County Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Duncan was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church and a
member of the Robert E. Lee #167 Eastern Star.
Mrs. Duncan was the daughter of the late James and Mary Lelar Potter
Weatherspooon. She was married to the late George Ferguson Duncan, Sr.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, George Ferguson Duncan, Jr.
and Gary Lambuth Duncan; and by three brothers Monroe Weatherspoon,
Richard Weatherspoon and Alvin Weatherspoon.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Horner of Hurricane Mills, her
son Jimmy Duncan of Snellville, Ga; her brothers Charlie Weatherspoon of
McEwen and Bill Weatherspoon of Goodlettsville; her sister Rachel
Malvina Totty of Duck River and five grandchildren.
