MORTALITY SCHEDULES, UNITED STATES CENSUSES HENDERSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith

Mr. Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith of Jackson has published seven genealogical miscellanies for Henderson County.  He wishes to share this information as widely as possible and has granted permission for these web pages to be created.  We thank Mr. Smith for his generosity.  Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 2001

For the census years 1850, 1860 and 1880 there are mortality schedules in which persons who had died during the years ending June 1, 1850 and 1860, May 31, 1880, are listed by name along with other pertinent information. This information, though faulty as it will be occasionally, is most useful for genealogists because official records of deaths were not kept in Tennessee previous to the twentieth century and because this information has not passed down through the generations of many families by means of family data entered in Bibles or preserved in other ways.

The mortality schedule for 1870, for Tennessee, is missing. Byron and Barbara Sistler published TENNESSEE MORTALITY SCHEDULES (Nashville, 1984) which is a very useful research source. However, in the present publication for Henderson County the names of black persons bearing single names have been listed along with pertinent information which is useful to persons who are tracing their black ancestry.

Except for the length of illness given in the mortality schedules other categories have been abstracted here. Arrangement of information: NAME OF PERSON WHO HAD DIED, GENDER AND COLOR (mw = male white; fw = female white; mb = male black; fb = female black); AGE; MARRIED or SINGLE (md; single); PLACE OF BIRTH; MONTH OF DEATH (with year); occasionally, OCCUPATION; CAUSE OF DEATH. Taken from microfilm, Memphis-Shelby Co. Public Library.
