Directions: Located almost directly across the road from the Beech Grove Church of Christ on the south side of Beech Grove Road. It is presently difficult of access being in a wooded area surrounded by a cotton field. (from JKT Smith book)
Source: “Tombstone Inscriptions From Black Cemeteries In Haywood County, Tennessee,” by Jonathan K. T. Smith, 1998 (used with permission from the author).
Note: Initially called the Cotter Cemetery for a black family of this neighborhood, the name has evolved to Carter and most people called the cemetery by this name. As the original name was Cotter, the present writer chose to list it in that manner. A Shed Cotter was one of the early preahers of Beech Grove Church of Christ. Taken from Tombstones, Funeral Home records, old Death Certificates and Mrs. Elene Bond, a long time resident of this area. (from JKT Smith book)
From WPA cemetery survey (20 Apr 1939):
