Jackson Van Buren Brown was the 1st son of William Sanford and Nancy Dykes Brown and there 2nd son was
Russell Lester Brown.
The two of them fought together at the Battle of Shiloh. The brothers
made a pact to be sure to find the other at the end of battle. It is
most likely both men fought under General Leonidas Polk's Division, as
most of the Tennessee soldiers were thus assigned. This being the case,
the brothers were in the forefront of the Battle at Shiloh Church where
the worst of the fighting occurred. Both brothers were wounded. A
fellow soldier, knowing where one brother had fallen, carried the other
to his side so that the brothers' pact was fulfilled. Both survived the
war and lived long lives in Grundy County, TN.
