Bynum, Sr, agr 71 years, died Sunday night after a few days of illness.He was born in Cannon County and moved here about the year 1884, where has followed the occupation of miner until 5 or 6 years ago having to give up this on account of his health. His wife and nine children survive him four daughters Mrs. R.L. Brannan, Mrs. W.A. Dishroom, Mrs. Tom Anderson, and Mrs. J. Nunley all of this place, and five sonsWilliam and Frank of Alabama, Geo of Arkansas, J. B. and John, of this place. Services were held at the residence by Rev. J. D. Nortcut and the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery Tuesday afternoon."

 

Fact 9: Widow's Pension Application filed by Catherine Hodges Bynumon 03 Jul 1907. It shows Jesse Bynum enlisted in Hillsboro, TN in 1862 , 44th TN Regiment for 1 year. He was not with his unit at surrender because, he had become ill and was on furlough at home and was cut off by the Yankees and could not get back to his unit. A letter from A T bell for John W. Hargis stated Jesse was a good soldier, but was sick and not in good health, but he did not desert. Hargis would have know if that happened. Jesse was sick until the end of the War. Department of Cumberland shows the soldier of that name was captured 03 Jul 1863 atTullahoma, Tennessee and he released 09 Jul 1863 on taking the oath.

"Tracy City, Tennessee, April 23 - Four miners received injuries at Tracy City Monday by falling slate. Capt. Lowery, mine foreman, was very badly hurt by a sudden fall of slate in an entry.

James Nunley, a miner, who went to his rescue, was also caught by other masses of falling slate and injured, and C. C. Nunley, a miner, who went to the relief of two pinioned men, was

crushed also, a leg being broken. R. T. Meyers, another miner, got one of his fingers cut off while the slate was being removed. None of the men are fatally hurt, but are suffering severe

injuries and it was a close call for some of them."
