Follow the Drinking Gourd. Before the Civil War an itinerant carpenter, Peg Leg Joe, traveled throughout the South, passing the tune to slaves. The words contained coded directions to travel north. The Drinking Gourd was code for the Big Dipper. File name:gourd.mid
Green Grow The Lilacs. This ballad is based on a similar song, Green Grows the Laurel, that was popular in 17th century Scotland. File name: greengro.mid
