Please do not place Billy Yank Songs on Johnny Reb pages, and Johnny Reb songs on
People of Color pages. These are the songs of our ancestors and are quite appropriate when
used in their proper place.

Follow the Drinking Gourd. Before the Civil War an
itinerant carpenter, Peg Leg Joe, traveled throughout the South,
passing the tune to slaves. The words contained coded directions to travel north. The
Drinking Gourd was code for the Big Dipper.

similar song, Green Grows the Laurel, that was popular in 17th century
Scotland.

Bright Mohawk Valley, a tune popular in New York. It spread throughout the
