JOHN ERWIN, Private, North Carolina Militia, $40.00 Annual Allowance, $100.00 Amount Rec'd, October 16, 1833 Pension Started, Age 71 (1835 Rolls, Giles County) John ERWIN applied for his pension on 28 Aug 1832 in Giles County, aged 70. He declared that he resided in Rowan County, North Carolina at the time of his enlistment. (Rev War Pension S1512). A John ERWIN is on the 1836 Giles County District 10 tax list, the only ERWIN in that district, and a John ERWIN, age 85, pensioner, is the head of household in the 1840 Giles County, Tennessee Census, p. 123

Wife of Joseph Addison Arnold. Descendant of John Manvel, John Erwin, Jr., and Gershom Tuttle. Daughter of Dr. John S. Arwine and Harriet A. Manville, his wife. Granddaughter of James Arwine and Mary Martin, his wife; Sylvanus Doolittle Manville (1806-69) and Mary Tuttle (1809-86), his wife, m. 1834. Gr.-granddaughter of John Erwin, Jr., and Eva Gooden, his wife; John Manvel, Jr. (1774-1847) and Ruth Wooster (1778-1863), his wife; Gershom Tuttle, Jr., 1769-1823) and Parmelia Strong Clark (1770-1851), his wife, m. 1788. Gr.-gr.-granddaughter of John Erwin (d. 1800); John Manvel and Elizabeth Weed, his wife, m. 1759; Gershom Tuttle and — Mitchel, his wife, m. 1759. John ERWIN, Jr., enlisted from Rowan County., North Carolina, as a private and his pension was allowed in Giles County., Tenn., for one years actual service as a private in the North Carolina line. He was born 1762. Gershom Tuttle, (1738-1818), was conductor of transporting supplies for the army. He was born in Conn.; died in Watertown, N. Y. John Manvel served as a private from Woodbury where in 1736 he was born.

Descendant of John Erwin, and of John Erwin, Jr., as follows: 1. John S. Arwine, M. D. (1824-1905), m. 1854 Harriet A. Manville (1836-99). 2. James Arwine (1799-1877) m. 1822 Mary Martin (1804-85). 3. John Erwin, Jr., m. 1798 Eva Gooding. 4. John Erwin. John Erwin served as private in Captain Simpson's company, Colonel Morgan's rifle regiment, Continental troops. He was born in England; died, 1850, in Virginia. John Erwin, Jr. (1762-1846), enlisted from Rowan County, North Carolina, as a private, and was pensioned in Giles County, Tenn., for one year's service as private, North Carolina Line.
