Impressed Slaves, 10 Oct 1863

Excerpted from Tennessee Slaves Impressed for Service on the North-Western Railroad, 10 Oct 1863 by Willie L. Robinson of Nashville, TN who adds that “The work was done on the railroad generally between Nashville and New Johnsonville.

CARTER, Ed - 42; 5’ 2"; owned by Frank CARTER of Pulaski, Giles Co., TN
EDMONDSON, Jery - 59; 5’ 8"; owned by Jo EVERS of Cornersville, Giles Co., TN
ENGLISH, Sam - 20; 5’ 6"; owned by Thomas ENGLISH of Caullville[?], Giles Co., TN

No Edward (etc.) or Frank CARTER are on the 1870 Giles County census as heads of households. No Jeremiah EDMUNDSON is on the 1870 as a head of household, and no EVERS are on the 1870 census (in 1880, Cornersville is in Marshall County).

No Sam. ENGLISH is found in 1870 as a head of household. A Thomas G. ENGLISH, 65, M, white, farmer, North Carolina, $25,000-3,650, is on the 1870 Giles Census, District 19, p. 403, HH193-194, and includes Kizziah ENGLISH, age 60, Female, Black, born Virginia. A Samuel ENGLISH is on p. 401 of this census, male, black, but is listed as only 17 years of age.

Colored CSA Pension Applications

Extracted from Tennessee Colored Pension Applications for CSA Service by Willie L. Robinson Nashville, TN

The “Colored Man’s Application for Pension” included the following statement:

“The Negros’ pension law passed by the Tennessee Legislature, provides that Negros Pensioned by this Act must have been bona fide residents of this State three years if they served with a Tennessee Command, and ten years if they served with a command from any other State. They must have remained with the army until the close of the war, unless legally relieved from service. They must be indigent. Unless you come clearly under the law, it is useless to file an application.

The board meets the second Tuesdays in January, April, July and October.”

ABERNATHY, Ruff - b. in Giles County, TN in 1845; claimed service with the 3rd Tenn. Inf.; application accepted.

DABNEY, Mack - b. in Giles County on Decmber 15, 1845; claimed service with the 3rd tenn. Inf.; application accepted.

GORDON, Nathan - b. in Giles County, TN in 1844; claimes service with the 11th Tenn, Cav.; application accepted.

LESTER, Richard - b. in Giles County, TN in 1843; claimed service with the 3rd Tenn. Inf. Co. G; application accepted.

LESTER, Robert - b. in Giles County, TN in 1845; claimed service with the 18th Tenn. Inf. Co. K; application accepted.

MOORE, Giles - b. in Giles County, TN; claimed service with the 9th Ala. Cav.; application accepted.
