Company D was organized at Ridgeville (now in Moore County but then a part of
Franklin County) in March 1861 and joined the Regiment at Winchester the next month. The men
were from Moore County (then Franklin County) and were nicknamed the "Ridgeville Hornets".

discharged at close of war. "At the surrender, I feared that I might be recognized by the U.S.
soldiers arrested and tried for desertion, so with about 1000 others tied white slips to our
bayonets like the payrolled soldiers, joined in with them and made my way home." Due to his
being a deserter from the Union Army, his application for a Federal pension in 1902 was
denied.*

Seven Days Battles around Richmond, VA, 26 June - 1 July 62; discharged 22 July 62 by reason
of his age, being a non-conscript (over-age) and returned to Franklin County. He was b. 18
February 1827 near Huntsville, Madison County, AL, 5'8", fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair.
Graduated from the Hygeio-Therapeutic College in New York City as a hydrotherapeutic or
water-cure doctor 13 April 1858. The following month he established a practice in the Harmony
community in Franklin County. After the war he located in Rienzi, Mississippi, possibly where his
wife had family. He then travelled on to New Orleans before finally sailing for Venezuela where
he died 25 September 1867 from exposure and fever. He was a half-brother to Henry T. CHILDS
also of this Company.*
CHILDS, Henry T. Pvt. He was b. 18 July 1841, Lincoln County. *Enr. 29 Apr 61 at Winchester
for twelve months, aged 19. He was severely wounded in the leg. He was absent sick until
deserted Aug 64. He went home to recuperate for twelve months and then joined the Forrest
Escort Company where he took part in numerous cavalry skirmishes until he was paroled with the
rest of Forrest's command at Gainesville, AL. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1873 and
served in that capacity for 21 years. He was elected to represent Lincoln County in the General
Assembly for the term 1913-1915. He applied for pension fromLincoln Co. after 1891, #10028.
He wrote a number of articles on his war experiences which were reprinted in the "Fayetteville
Observer" in 1917. He died 15 December 1920 of burns.He served with Turney's First TN
Regiment in Virginia, having enlisted when he was only 18 years of age. He was wounded and
sent home and after recovery was a member of Forrest's Escort and surrendered at Gainesville,
AL. He was bur. in the family grave yard. He was survived by one son and two daughters - Mr.
A.T. CHILDS, Mrs. E. H. CUNNINGHAM and Mrs W.A. SMITH. He died at age 79.*
