FAMILY REUNIONS There comes a time in summer
When folks begin to gather.
It happens about this time each year
At a time we call, "pretty weather."
When friends and families mingle
They greet you with good cheer.
The old folks look a little older
They hug you and wipe a tear.Last years babies are now toddling,
The youngsters have grown so tall.
Some of the old folks are missing,
We learned that the Master called.Yet, in all there's still quite a crowd
From many states they came.
And each and every one of them
So proudly wear their name.At first, a talk from a gifted voice;
A prayer to say thanks for our blessings,
Then starts the rotation around the tables
Tables filled with all the dressings.
In a large pot, Chicken and dumplings,
Fried chicken, a specialty of Aunt Sue.
Homemade pickles, relishes and chow chow,
'Tater salad, baked bread and beef stew.There are tables with sweets overflowing.
Too great a number to taste them all.
Cakes of every kind and color,
Meringue pies, a mile high tall!To most, this is a common thing,
That just happens every year.
You see the same folks, once again;
Hold on to loved ones dear.Look again at the past years photos,
At the ones who have now gone home.
The matriarchs who could tell us secrets
Locked forever in their minds, are gone.As this time of year approaches,
Heed this warning and please don't wait
To ask family questions of the elders.
For soon, you see, it's too late.
One hopes this practice continues,
And never fades away.
Like dinners on the ground and river baptisms
Family Reunions are here to stay.Jay Cee~~ - May 10, 2001
