Mark Your Calendars
Join descendants of the Pioneers of the First District of Williamson County, TN on August 26, 2006 for the long-awaited, first-ever reunion and discover new relatives and explore where we each fit into the big family. The reunion is being hosted by Heycuz, a genealogy online newsgroup whose members are all related on some level, most of whom are descendants of the pioneers of the First District. The original pioneer families of the First District of Williamson County include: Sullivan, Green, Stinson, Barnhill, Bradford, Beard, Walker, White, Oliphant, Carter, Duncan, Bryant, Overbey, Buttrey, Daugherty, Lampley, Jones, King, Givens, Pewit, Smith, Harrison, Hughes, Mangrum, Hall, Lankford, and Tidwell--to name a few. Originally, some of the First District was a part of Dickson and Hickman Counties, but when the Dickson, Hickman, and Williamson county lines were redrawn they all ended up in the First District of Williamson County.
Since its creation in 1998, members of Heycuz have yearned for a "family" reunion of sorts because its members had become part of each other's daily lives. Finally, thanks to the work of member and reunion chairperson, Stacey Givens we have set a firm date: Aug. 26th. Stacey, a long-time member of Heycuz, has agreed to help us and taken the reins as head "cuzzin" in the planning and coordinating of this event. She brings her vast knowledge of the area and her family ties to the endeavor, not to mention her boundless energy and enthusiasm.
The event will be held at the Fairview Recreation Center, 2714 Fairview Boulevard, Fairview, TN 37062. The center also has a commercial kitchen, AC, an adjacent pool, plenty of tables and chairs, a stage and a piano. It is an ideal location for the gathering and the family exhibits.
We also have confirmed that Rick Warwick, Historian for the Williamson County Historical Founation, and author of "Out There in The First District," will be our keynote speaker. A favorite of many genealogy gatherings, Rick will join us as guest for the day and will guide us through the history of the area and its people and conclude with examples of the craftsmanship of the chairmakers famous in the First District, featured in his latest book, "A Century of Chairmakers.” He will also be available to sign books and answer questions. Our ancestors were very skilled craftsmen and women and it seems that these traits were passed down. So, attendees are asked to bring and display their wares: including woodwork, artwork, photography, heirloom quilts, and books. Attendees are also asked to bring ancestral photographs and genealogical research files, which will be scanned and returned to them by the end of the day with an accompanying CD of everyone's contributions.
Since many plan to attend from out-of-town, we are also working on tours to some of the old cemeteries and homesteads, to the Dickson County Turnbull Creek Primitive Baptist Church, as well as the research archives at Franklin. Tours will take place on the day before the Reunion, Friday Aug. 25th. On the evening of the Reunion, Grady and Stacey Givens will host a special barbecue for the members of Heycuz at their farm, which was one of the original Sullivan family farms. On the day after the reunion, members can attend the Hudgins Cemetery Decoration Day Observance. The weekend promises to be a full one.
We expect attendees from as far away as Southern California and Michigan. So arrangements have been made for a special group rate at the Holiday Inn in Dickson. To get the special rate, attendees must book directly from the Dickson Holiday Inn, at 2420 Hwy 46, South Dickson, by calling them directly at (615) 446-9081. The rate is not available online or at the toll number.
We are looking for volunteers who are willing to give tours, assist out-of-town guests, and set up prior to the events. For more information, please contact Stacey Givens, ggsimgene@aol.com (615) 799-0003 home , P.O. Box 839, Fairview, TN 37062; or April Heath Pastis at heycuz@adelphia.net or (714) 550-9933. For more information and to pre-register please visit http://heycuz.net/docs/ANNC/reunion.html.
