The Griffin Family

John GRIFFIN was born 12 November 1800, in North Carolina or Tennessee. He married Mary ATKINSON/AKISON/ACKERSON about 1825. They were in Jefferson County, Tennessee by 1826, when John had a land grant. They moved to Cocke County about 1855, and lived near English Mountain. Children: Elizabeth, Nathan, Martha Jane, Catherine, John, Lee, James, Francis, William and Isaac. Three sons fought for the North and four sons for the South in the Civil War. The oldest son, Nathan, was probably killed during the war. After the war ended, four sons, James, Francis, William and Isaac moved to Texas. John Griffin died 2 July 1887, Newport. He was buried Morris Cemetery in Cocke County. Allied families from the area are ATKINSON, BAILEY, CARRELL, CASE, EMERT, FREE, FRESHOUR, LEWIS, MITCHELL, RUTHERFORD, SCHULTZ, STRIPLING, STUART.
