James G S Newell was born. Mar 3, 1827 in Newport, Cocke Co, TN, died Feb 7, 1894 in Georgetown, Meigs Co, TN (listed as James G on headstone). James was married on March 9, 1848 to Cassander Elizabeth WOODS (born April 1830 North Carolina and died June 15, 1901 Georgetown, Bradley Co, TN). James served as a private in Co A, 8th Reg't, Tennessee Infantry Volunteers. Enlisted at Knoxville, TN March 18, 1862, honorably discharged at Wilmington, NC on March 4, 1865, under the command of William (sp?) Shelton. James Newell served at Knoxville, TN, Eash/East/Cash ?, TN and Georgia in 1863 and 1864. His pension checks came out of Knoxville, TN.

Karen notes: " My cousin, Mary Newell Bailey, James and Cassander's G-Granddaughter, said that where James and Cassander lived, in Georgetown, was considered Confederate territory and James fought for the Union. She also said that he was a recruiter and I found in his pension papers this to be true. She said that he was ambushed at his house one day by the confederates; their house was called "the house of blood" by people around there.....He and Cassander are buried in Francisco Cemetery, Georgetown, Bradley Co, TN. My cousin who told me where this cemetery is, said the recent tornado there did extensive damage to the cemetery".
