Riley H. (Mack) HILL

My GGrandfather Riley H. (Mack) HILL, along with his brother Eli Hill, Jr. joined the 62nd Tn. Inf. Co. I (CSA) in Newport, Cocke Co., TN.

A very helpful person sent me the following information from the book "Cocke County Confederates" - Service Records of nearly 800 Southern Soldiers Recruited from Cocke County, Tennessee, 1861-1865, compiled by Darby O'Neil Taylor and William D. Taylor.

HILL, Riley (also "Royal") H.  Private, Co. "I", 62nd Tennessee Infantry (later
Mounted Infantry). 19 years old. Enlisted in the Co. at Newport, Sep. 10, '62, by
Capt. William R. Smith, and into the Regt. at Sweetwater, Tenn., by Col. John
Rowan, Nov. 11, '62, for 3 yrs. or "War".  Dec. 1 - 31, '63 muster ("Mint
Springs, near Vicksburg, Miss."):  Present; Jan./Feb. '63 muster ("Camp near
Vicksburg, Miss."): Present; Mar./Apr. '63 muster ("near Vicksburg, Miss."):
Present.  On the Roll of POWs paroled with the surrender of the garrison,
Vicksburg, Miss., Jul. 4, '63.  Vicksburg parole document in file, signed by mark
on Jul. 8, '63.  Also, on a Roll of Deserters from the Rebel Army, July 14, '64,
"discharged Jul. 14, '64, and sent North of the Ohio R." Oath signed by mark at
Knoxville, Jul. 1, '64, stating he was "captured in Cocke Co. "  Florid
complexion, dark hair and gray eyes. 6'2" tall.  Another Oath, signed supposedly
on the same day, states he is [unreadable] complected, dark hair, blue eyes, and
5'11".  Notation: "Rec'd pass to Jeffersonville, Ind., Jul. 1, '64." Nothing
further in this file.
Record Highlight:  Turned himself in at Knoxville a year after being paroled at
Vicksburg.  May or may not have been required to spend the rest of the War
residing in Jeffersonville, Ind.

My Riley H Hill applied for a pension:

NAME:  Hill,  Riley H.
PENSION #:  S7725
COUNTY:  McNairy
UNIT:  62nd Inf.

His claim was rejected Dec. 5, 1905.  The Pension Review Board said they couldn't find any records of him.   I went through the Confederate Parole Records and found a Royal Hilo in 62 TN Inf. Co. I.   As Riley was apparently illiterate - he marked X on his pension application - he would have had no way of knowing if his name was entered wrong on the roster.  I have been unable to find a Hilo family in Cocke Co. on any records, and I feel quite certain that Royal Hilo is my Riley Hill.
On his pension application he stated he was born 24 May, 1844 in "Cox" Co., Tn. near Newport.  (note:  all other records I have found stated 1843?)

If his pension had been approved, it would have been of little benefit to him as he passed away 22 May, 1906 in McNairy Co. TN.

Eli Hill, Jr. is listed on CSA 62nd TN INF  Co. I roster.

I don't know if Eli was killed or died during the war, or what happened to Mary, his wife, but by the 1870 census his children were living with Grandparents.  George W. Hill was living with Agnes Hurley, age 78 in Cocke Co.    Daniel was living in Sevier Co. with Eli Hill, Sr.
