3. HENRY3 CALFEE (WILLIAM JOAS "JOSEPH"2 CALFE, WILLIAM1) was born abt. 1680 in Ireland?, and died 1729 in Hanover, VA. He married ELEANOR BEZAM.

Notes for HENRY CALFEE: The Calfee's were one of the First Families of Tennessee. The Calfee surname is of Irish decent. It is believed that our Calfee family came from England and settled in Virginia. The Tennessee branch is believed to have come from Virginia. Henry Calfee is listed as a witness to the will of Lazarus Taylor in Northumberland County, VA 29 Feb. 1711-1712. Henry also obtained a land grant in King George County, VA 24 September 1724 in Hanover Parish for 696 acres. This land joined the land where Henry lived at the time in King George County.

Henry Calfee's will was written 6 December 1728 and admitted for probate 2 May 1729 in King George County, VA. He was probably buried in Prince William County, VA. These two counties may actually be one in the same. His wife at the time of death was Eleanor, maiden name possibly Bezam. It is unknown if Eleanor was mother of children - I'll keep her as such until I learn otherwise. No descendants named Eleanor have been found to date.

She was listed in will of her father, Henry Calfee on 6 Dec 1728 in King George County, VA. She received a land grand in 1741 in Augusta County, VA. She died in 1781 in Shenandoah County, VA. One source says Judith was Irish. She was married to William "Brindle Bill" Hurst, Sr. (son of Henry Hurst and Anna Beeler) between 1728 and 1730 in England. William Hurst, Sr. was born in 1702 in Leckhampstead, Buckinghamshire, England. He received a land grant in 1741 in August County, VA. He died on 21 Mar 1781 in Hawksbill Creek, Shenandoah County, VA. William's nickname was "Brindle Bill" because he was a red head. He was a farmer and owned a farm of 400 acres in Shenandoah County, VA. He traveled up the Potomac and seemed to have lived along the lower reaches of the Shenandoah River for a time, but by 1741 had moved up the south Fork where they purchased a 400 acre tract near the mouth of Hawksbill Creek. He spent the rest of his life on his farm and made his will there on 15 Oct 1780; it was probated on 29 Mar 1781. Judith Calfee and William "Brindle Bill" Hurst, Sr. had six children.

6. JOHN "CAPTAIN JACK"5 HURST , SR. (JUDITH4 CALFEE, HENRY3, WILLIAM JOAS "JOSEPH"2 CALFE, WILLIAM1) was born 1732 in Jamestown, Shenandoah County, VA, and died September 22, 1825 in Harrison County, IN. He married (1) LYDIA ANN SMITH 1760 in Shenandoah County, VA. He married (2) MARY BEVERLY BARKSDALE 1792 in Bedford County, VA.

Notes for JOHN "CAPTAIN JACK" HURST , SR.: "Captain Jack" was buried in Hursttown Cemetery, Harrison County, IN. John was a Revolutionary War veteran. He furnished George Washington's army with tobacco and meat during the Revolution. He lived in Virginia, near Culpepper at that time. John lived in Greene County, TN for about 10 years and then moved on to Beargrass Creek, KY (now Bulitt County). He stayed there only about six months at the most, then moved on to Harrison County, IN. The Hursts established a mill and school on Big Indian Creek. Charles Noah Dome writes about John in a pamplet written in the early 1900's. He obtained his information from Benjamin Franklin Hurst who secured the information by visiting Culpepper and Shenandoah, VA and by correspondence. According to Dome: Before John and Mary married he had eleven Hurst children and she had eleven Lindsey children. After marriage only one child was born, Beverly Hurst, making 23 children in all. John heard of Mary, a widow in Georgia, and hitched up his 4-horse team and taking several of his negro slaves and provisions for the journey, went to see her. Immediately on his arrival, he proposed and gave her till the next morning to think about it. Next morning after breakfast he pushed back and said (he had a deep commanding voice) "Well, what do you say about it?" and she said "Yes". He gave orders to his slaves and promptly loaded up her household effects and along with her children took them to his Virginia home. Needless to state the old gentleman was possessed of great courage and stamina. He was married to Lydia Ann Smith in 1760 in Shenandoah County, VA. Lydia Ann Smith was born in 1736. She died in 1786 in Montgomery County, VA. He then married Mary Beverly Barksdale in 1792 in Bedford County, VA. Mary was born in 1736 in GA. She died in 1834 in Harrison County, IN. Mary apparently had eleven children by her first husband, Mr. Lindsey. Two of Mary's daughters did not wish to come to Indiana with them, and after being compelled to come 2 days journey ran off one night and returned to Virginia.

Notes for LETTITIA (LETTICE): There is a reference to a Lettes Coffee in the Big Pigeon Baptist Church Minutes 1787-1874 on the Cocke County, TN Records page. I don't know if this is our Lettice (pronounced as "Let-teece") - but this is the only reference that I have stumbled upon that even comes close to her unusual name of Lettice. The surname Calfee I have found to be spelled Caffee, Coffee and Calfe. Even in this reference - her name is spelled as Lettes Coffee and Letes Cafee! With the unusual first name and the last name as Coffee - this may be our gal. These minutes were transcribed typed exactly as they were hand written from the original minutes - thus the mis-spellings, etc. "30th of April 1803 Met according to adjornment and after divine servis proseaded to buisness - adoor being Opened for the Receiving of Members and Mary Sisk Receiv.d by Letter - the Breathren W. Georte...C.Campell...W. She married CHRISTIAN SMITH abt. 1898 in Cocke County, TN, son of FRANK SMITH and ELIZA OVERHOLT.

Notes for CHRISTIAN SMITH: Christian was a blacksmith and had a log blacksmith shop on his farm. They just recently tore it down (1997). Christian and others would go to the 8th grade 2 or 3 years, because it was not easy to get to a school and there were not many high schools available. Christian wanted his kids educated and brought someone into the home to teach his kids. Christian's house was just recently sold at auction. Conrad Smith went and said that the house looked much the same. He remembers the inside with no running water, no electricity or plumbing. He said his grandfather used kerosene lamps and a wood fireplace for heat. The house was never finished upstairs. Conrad's father told him there were some mornings he would wake up with snow on the bed. Christian and Jay Calfee would kill a beef cow, put it in the back of their truck and peddle it out up and down the road - selling 4 to 6 pounds at a time. Christian is named in his grandfather, James Wiley Overholt's will. Please see note for Noah Smith.
