JESSE WYNN

Submitted by Terry Baker

Jesse Wynn

This photo had "Wynne Dennis and Beck" written in pencil on the back. Captain Wynne was in the banking business with Mr. Dennis and Mr. Beck in the 1870s and 80s in Forrest City AR. By comparing it to another photo, it became obvious that the man seated on the left was Jesse Watkins Wynne. His father was Col Robert Wynne of Wilson Co TN. Jesse was born in Holly Springs MS in 1839, and his family then moved to the Republic of Texas. He joined the 3rd Texas Cavalry in April 1861 as a private. His final rank was captain. He fought at Wilson's Creek, where he was wounded in the head. He fought at Pea Ridge AR, and the battles around Corinth MS. He was wounded in the arm at Resaca GA, was taken prisoner at Jonesboro GA, but tricked his captors into the Confederate lines. He was paroled at Marshall Texas 11 Jul 1865. From there he moved to St Francis Co AR and took a cattle drive there from Texas in 1866. In 1889 he moved to Memphis where he died in 1907. His wife Margaret Ross Wynne, who was also his cousin, died there in 1926. Of their four sons, only two lived to adulthood in Memphis.
