James C. Hamilton became sick with small pox at Murfreesborough, Tennessee in the U.S. Hospital.  He died on December 19, 1863, and is buried at the small pox cemetery.

Out of the 600,000 soldiers that died in the Civil War it is estimated that 2/3 of those men perished from disease and infection.  During service the regiment lost 4 officers and 38 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded, and 3 officers and 211 enlisted men by disease for a total of 256.
