MEMORANDA

This Regiment was organized the 24th of October, 1864, in Hamilton County. It was employed for some time by Maj. Gen. Steadman, commanding the District of the Etowah, in scouting the Cumberland Mountains in Tennessee and Northern Georgia, after the numerous guerrilla bands which infested that region. Portions of the regiment were always on scouting expeditions, and had frequent engagements with the bushwhackers. The contest was one of extraordinary severity on both sides. This regiment had repeated engagements with the notorious Gatewood guerilla band in Northern Georgia, the most remarkable of which was in January, 1865. Leaving Chattanooga in the morning, our troops marched forty-five miles until they came in sight of the guerrilla camp about midnight. The guerrillas, eighty in number, were all asleep and their camp fires were burning brightly. Captain McWilliams' company was dismounted and posted in rear of the camp, and Lieut. Adam Kelly, with fify men, made a charge upon the guerillas in front. Fourteen of the rebels were killed on the spot, and a number wounded. The rest made their escape, with the loss of most of their horses and arms. Not one of our men was killed or badly wounded. In March, 1865, the regiment was turned over to the Commander of the Department, and shortly afterward it was ordered to report to General Steadman. It was then placed under General Judah, commanding at Decatur Ga., the last of March, 1865, and remained their scouting until the surrender of the rebel army, when it was ordered to Resacca, Ga., where its men were employed as couriers along the railroad to Atlanta. On the 18th of June, 1865, the regiment was ordered to Nashville and mustered out of service on the 30th of that month.
