Fourth Arkansas Cavalry

Submitted by Mildred Collins Wasser
August 29, 2001

This information was copied from microfilm files of the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry records at the Arkansas State Archives and from the Pension Rolls of the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry. I noticed that while doing some research for an email friend (Jane Ikemura) that this outfit had a lot of men from Tennessee serving in it. I decided to copy the information thinking that one day there might be a use for it. If anyone has additional information on any of the following people I will be most happy to receive it and add it to the list.

Brief history of the Fourth Arkansas Union Cavalry:

The raising of the 4th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry volunteers was begun in November 1863 under the direction of William M. Fishback and completed December 29, 1864. Meantime companies of the regiment, as rapidly as organized, were placed on active duty and experienced the usual vicissitues of the service.

The first battalion was mustered in for one year or during the war, but the muster was declared invalid by the Adjutant General of the Army, and in the month of December that battalion was disabled, and the regiment commenced reorganizing as a three years’ organization. The regiment filled up quite rapidly until the disastrous expedition of General Steele in the month of March, 1864, which discouraged enlistments, and the organization of the regiment was not completed until December 29, 1864.

Company A was organized by Captain Joel Brown on the 12th day of December, 1863 at Little Rock. Company B was organized by Captain James R. Lafferry on the 9th of January 1864 at Little Rock. Company C was organized by Captain Henry Wood on the 28 day of January, 1864 at Little Rock. Company D organized by Captain George H. Hand on 5th day of March, 1864 at Little Rock. Company E under the direction of Captain George W. Smith was organized 29th day of March 1864 at Little Rock. Company F organized by Captain William H. Warner on 7th day of April 1864 at Little Rock. Company G organized by Captain William J. Green on 29th day of April 1864 at Little Rock. Company H organized by Captain John F. Sanders on 7th day of May 1864 at Little Rock. Company I organized Captain Emory E. Knowlton on the 16th day of October 1864 at Little Rock. Company K organized by Captain Joseph Bennett on the 18th day of June 1864 at Little Rock. Company L organized by Captain James S. Clark on the 15th day of July 1864 at Little Rock. Company M organized by Captain Frederick F. Burlock on the 31st day of December 1864 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

Although the regiment as such has never been in any general engagements, detachment of it have been in several skirmishes and fights. A portion of Company G was in a fight at Mount Elba, Arkansas on the 30th day of March 1864. Companies A, B, C, E and K were in a fight at Dardanelle, Arkansas when that place was attacked by the rebel General Shelby’s command on the 16th day of May 1864. The regiment also had a severe skirmish with the enemy on Saline River, Arkansas on the 16th of July 1864 in which the brave Captain Hugh Quin was killed.

Portions of the regiment have also been in several other skirmishes at different times, and a large number of bushwhackers have at various times been captured by it.

The regiment was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas on the 30th day of June 1865.

The above is from a communication to A. W. Bishop, Adjutant General, State of Arkansas from the Headquarters of the Fourth Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, Little Rock, Arkansas June 8 1865. The communication was signed by Horace L. Moore, Lieutenant Colonel Commanding Regiment.

The following is an excerpt from A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, Regimental Histories by Frederick H. Dyer.
