SOLDIER’S APPLICATION FOR PENSION
I, T.H.W. PETTY a native of the State of Tennessee and now a citizen of Tennessee residing at Jeremiah in the County of Putnam and who was a soldier from the State of Tennessee in the War Between the United States and Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under the Act of the General Assembly of Tennessee entitled “ an Act for the benefit of the indigent and disabled soldiers of the late war between the States, and to fix fees of attorneys or agents for procuring such pensions, and fixing a penalty for violation of the same, “I do solemnly swear that which in the discharge of my duty in the Confederate or United States as a member of Co. “C” Captain Saunders 4 th Tenn. Cavalry and Baxter Smith

From the effect of such wounds I was disabled as follows:
Answer-None
And that by reason of disability and indigence I am now entitled to receive the benefit of this Act. I further swear that I do not hold any National , State, or County office, nor do I receive aid or pension from any other state or from the United States, and that I am not an inmate of any soldier’s home and that I am unable to earn a reasonable support for myself and family. I do further solemnly swear that the answers given to the following questions are true:

Answer-1861 in month of July Col. Baxter Smith, Capt. Saunders, 1 st Lt. Van H. Allen
In what battle were you engaged in and if not wounded, state what disabilities did you receive if any?
Answer- None I contracted a terrible kidney disease while in the army also jaundice in eyes this became very bad after confinement at Fort Delaware
What was the precise nature of your wound or disability incurred?
Answer-See Above
Were you incapacitated for service by reason of said wounds or disability?
Answer-I kept with the army after I was exchanged
Were you discharged from the army by reason of said wounds or disabilities?
Answer-No
If discharged from the army, were you and what did you do until the end of the war?
Answer-No answer
What was the name of the surgeon who attended you?
Answer-Dr. Wolsey
How did you get out of the army, when and where?
Answer-Surrendered with command at Charlotte, North Carolina
Did you take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States Government?
Answer-Took the same oath all others did and was paroled
If so, when under what circumstances?
Answer-See above
Are you married or have you been married?
Answer-Yes
If so what is the size of your family living together?
Answer -Wife and one child with me. Six children married and gone away.
What are respectful age of your wife and children?
Answer- 52, 37, 35, 32, 28, 25, 23, 25
To what sex do your children belong?
Answer- 4 girls and 3 boys
Are not some of your children able to support you?
Answer-No they have they nothing
In what business are you now engaged, if any and what do you earn?
Answer-Trying to farm when able. Very little I do will to my rent
What estate have you in your own right, real and personal and what is it value?
Answer-None
What estate has your wife in her own right, real and personal and what is its value?
Answer-None
How have you derived support for yourself and family for the last five years?
Answer-Trying to farm support has been very scant
Do you use any intoxicants to exist?
Answer-No
How long have you been an actual resident of the State of Tennessee?
Answer-All my life
Have you an Attorney to look after this petition?
Answer-Yes

Smith County Clerk of Courts of said County the above named T. H. W. Petty the applicant with whom I personally acquainted, and having read the application and fully explained to him as well as the statements and answers therein made, made oath that the said statements and answers are true.

Smith County Clerk of Courts of said County the above named Frank Savofie
One of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing application and who is a physician of good standing and being duly sworn says that he has carefully and thoroughly examined
the applicant T. H. W. Petty and find him laboring under the following disabilities.
I have this day examined and find him sufficiently with weak eyes. He states that he has diarrhea of long standing and that his kidneys give him much trouble and that he goes weeks or months unable to do any kind of labor. Mr. Petty is not a strong man of his age.

STATE OF TENNESSEE Personally appeared before me W. M. Johnson
Smith County of said County, the above named Thomas Gann and W. H. Flippen two of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing application with whom I am personally aquatinted, and known to be citizens of veracity and standing in this community and who make oath that they are personally are acquainted with the applicant and the facts set forth and statements made in this application are correct and true “ to the best of their knowledge and belief and they have no interest in this claim , and that said applicant’s habits are god and free from dishonor. And They further makes oath to the following facts touching the applicant’s service in the Confederate army.
He was Private in Co. C of the 4 th Tenn. Cavalry, Colonel commanding Baxter Smith. He served throughout the war and he was honorably discharged at Charlotte, North Carolina in May 1865.

The records show that Thomas W. H. Petty ( not borne as T. H. W. Petty) Corporal, Company C 8 th Tennessee also designated 4 th see Cavalry (Smith’s) C. S. A. was enlisted July 22, 1861, and was paroled at Fort Delaware, February 27, 1865, and forwarded to City Point for exchange. Nothing has been found to show he was paroled at Charlotte, North Carolina.

Thomas H. W. Petty was born on May 22, 1839 died at the age of 86 years old on February 27, 1925, and he was interned in the Perrion Camp Grounds in Putnam County, Tennessee.
