Col. P.(Peter) P. Pickard, Gray Vet And Bank Founder Dies Here.

Widely Known and Highly Esteemed Citizen.

Col. P. P. Pickard, 83, founder of the Ashland City Bank and Trust Company, State Comptroller from 1883 to 1889 and widely known Confederate veteran, died at his home here Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. following a week's illness.

Because of his public services, Col. Pickard was well known throughout the state. He served as State Comptroller during the two administrations of Gen. William B. Bate, and the first administration of Robert L. Taylor, as governors of Tennessee, and was supervisor of the census for the Sixth Congressional District in 1900.

Col. Pickard was born in Hickman County on October 1, 1845, and at the age of 15 he enlisted in the Confederate Army, joining Frank Maney's artillery battery. He served until he was wounded while sharp-shooting at Rocky Face Ridge, near Dalton, GA, in 1864.

Following the close of the Civil War he moved to Perry County where he was married to Miss Julia Britt in 1867.

In 1901 Colonel Pickard came to Asland City and gave the city its first bank when he organized the Asland City Bank & Trust Company. He served as cashier and active manager of the bank since its organization, and the success of the institution is attributed largely to his business judgement and ability to make friends.

He was a leader in civic, social and religious circles, and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Surviving him are his wife Mrs. Julia Pickard, and the following children: Mrs. J. H. Slayden of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Mrs. Molly Harris, Asland City, Nixon Pickard, Bowling Green, Ky., Obed Pickard, New York City, E. B. Pickard, Norfolk, Va. and Tavel Pickard, Nashville.

Funeral services were conducted from the Christian Church Thursday afternoon by Rev. J. S. Rice, pastor of the Ashland City Methodist Church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

The following will serve as active pallbearers: Will Adkisson, J. B. Smith, W. C. Bouldin, C. S. Brinkley, G. E. Murff, and J. S. Morris. Honorary pallbearers will be Lit Pardue, Hugh Dozier, J. C. Chambliss, J. J. Nave, J. J. Everett, Will Harris, T. J. Stump and Dr. W. S. Lockert.
