Title: HUGH D. DYKE, NEAR CENTENARIAN DIES IN WILLIAMS - VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR RITES FRIDAY Father of Eight Passes On At Home of Granddaughter Aged 96 Years Hugh Douglas Dyke, past 96 years of age, died last night in Williams at the Dyke home over which Mrs. Viola Greenwood, a granddaughter, presided. The venerable Civil War veteran was probably the oldest man in Colusa county and up to his recent illness was active and alive to affairs of the community. The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the home with Rev. Kidd of Williams church in charge of the last rites. Interment will be made by J. D. McNary & Son in the Williams cemetery. The venerable Colusan had an adventurous life and was an interesting character. He was born in Greeneville, Tenn., September 29, 1835. On August 7, 1863, he enlisted with Co. C, Ninth regiment of Tennessee Cavalry and saw active service in the last days of the war. In 1881 he crossed the plains with his wife and eight children for California. The surviving children are: J. D. Dyke of Alaska, Mrs. Georgia Fitzhugh of Sacramento, Miss Amy Dyke of Saratoga, former public health nurse of Colusa county, and W. E. Dyke of Williams, Mr. Robert Dyke of Sacramento and Mrs. Sarah Carpenter of Williams. There are seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren surviving.
[NOTE: The submitter's paternal grandmother, Viola Vivian (O'Bryant) Felton, is listed in this obituary as "Viola Greenwood". Viola Vivian (O'Bryant) Felton married a Leslie H. Greenwood on August 7, 1930 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada].
