Black-Funeral services over the remains of the late Alexander Black, aged sixty-seven years, who died at his home at 500 Grainger Avenue at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning, were held from the residence at two o'clock Monday afternoon, Rev. A. Webster, pastor of the Gillespie Avenue Baptist Church officiating.
The deceased was a Confederate Veteran, having been a member of the Eighteenth Tennesee, and a short time before his death, had requested that three Confederate veterans and three Union veterans act as pall-bearers at his burial. His wishes were observed, and the following acted as pall-bearers: J. Brittain Lyttle, James Ketchen and J.C. Brown, Confederates; N.B. Graham, J.W. Cheatham and B.F. Bashor, members of McKinley post, G.A.R. At the grave in Greenwood Cemetery, the ritualistic ceremonies of the U.C.V. were conducted by Mr. Lyttle.
NOTE: THE REGIMENT LISTED HERE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND TO BE ACCURATE. ALEXANDER BLACK BELONGED TO CO. E, 16HT GEORGIA. THIS IS ALSO STATED ON HIS PENSION RECORDS. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE KNEE AT THE BATTLE OF THE WILDERNESS. A VETERANS STONE HAS BEEN PLACED FOR HIM AT GREENWOOD CEMETERY IN KNOXVILLE. MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND ON HIM ON THIS SITE. HIS FAMILY OWNED NO SLAVES.
