BEARD, W. D.: Judge W. D. Beard of the Tennessee Supreme Court died suddenly of heart disease in his room at the Hermitage Hotel, Nashville, Wednesday morning. His death was a great shock to his friends over the state. Judge Beard was 73 years of age, and had a remarkably brilliant career. He was a gallant Confederate soldier. Graduated from the Lebanon Law School before the Civil War, his whole life was spent in the legal profession except during his army service. Appointed to the supreme bench in 1890, he only served a few months. In 1891, he was appointed chandellor (sic) by Gov. Buchanan. Judge Beard was three times elected as justice of the supreme court, in 1894, 1902, and 1910. He served as chief justice from 1903 until a few months ago. He was considered one of the ablest jurists in the South. Judge Beard had lived in Memphis for many years. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Gov. Patterson will appoint a successor to the dead justice, who will serve until the August election of 1912.
