William Jasper Houston was born on 28 May 1838 in or near Washington County, Virginia. He is the son of James R. Houston and Martha Ann Buchanan who were married in Washington County on 18 Oct. 1832. This family moved to the Claiborne County, Tenn. area. William Jasper had a sister named Nancy Jane Houston who married Levi Herron in Smyth County, VA on 27 Sept. 1852. He was killed during the war. Nancy was said to have been a nurse during the war.

William Jasper Houston married Margaret Ann Fox on 16 Sept. 1857 in Claiborne County, Tenn. They had one daughter, Margaret Ann Houston, who was left orphaned due to the death of her mother ca. 1859 and her father during the war. She lived with her grandparents Abraham Fox and Elizabeth Goodman in Claiborne County. She married John Davis Walker.

William Jasper Houston was my 4th great grandfather. I participate in reenacting and serve in the 29th Tennessee Confederate Inf. Reg. as William Jasper Houston did. Currently reside in Knoxville, Tenn. Named both my sons William in honor of myself, my father, William Jasper Houston and several other Williams in our family, some of whom also served during the war.
